Medical and dental colleges in Chandigarh
Chandigarh is a major centre for medicine. PGIMER is one of India's top two medical institutes in NIRF, but it offers no MBBS. School-leavers aiming for MBBS should look at GMCH-32 and the new state medical college in Mohali. There is no AIIMS in the tricity. The nearest are AIIMS Bathinda (Punjab) and AIIMS Bilaspur (Himachal Pradesh).
| Name | Type | NIRF 2025 rank | Main courses | Admission route | Locality | Official website |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PGIMER | Institute of National Importance | 2 (Medical) | MD/MS, DM/MCh, MDS, B.Sc Nursing, paramedical | INI-CET (PG), institute tests | Sector 12, Chandigarh | pgimer.edu.in |

PGIMER Chandigarh
PGIMER was set up in 1962 and made an Institute of National Importance in 1967. It is the region's main referral hospital, and it was ranked 2nd in the NIRF 2025 Medical category, behind AIIMS New Delhi. It is the right target for doctors planning MD/MS or super-speciality training after MBBS.
GMCH Sector 32
GMCH opened in 1991 and is the city's only government MBBS college. Seats are few and competition is tough, so you need a strong NEET-UG rank. The college is 34th in NIRF 2025 Medical.
Planning to study medicine? Look at scholarships for medical students early, because NEET counselling moves quickly.

GGDSD College in Sector 32 is popular for commerce and computer applications. MCM DAV and DAV College are well known for arts, sciences and sports. PGGC-11 and PGGC-46 are common first choices for science and humanities.
Panchkula (Haryana) options
Panchkula colleges are affiliated to Kurukshetra University and follow Haryana's online admission process. The best known are Government PG College, Sector 1 and the NIFT Panchkula campus for design (nift.ac.in/panchkula), which admits through the NIFT entrance exam. Neither appears in NIRF's top lists.
Verify before you apply: Fees, seat matrices and cut-offs change every year. Always confirm them on the official website or the counselling portal. Some old college domains have been taken over by unrelated websites, so use only the official links above or those given by PU, JAC or the UT administration.
How admission works in Chandigarh
The route depends on the course and on whether you hold a Chandigarh (UT pool) domicile. Here is the usual sequence:
- Pick your entrance exam: JEE Main (B.Tech/B.Arch at PEC, UIET, CCA), NEET-UG (MBBS/BDS at GMCH-32 and PU Dental), IAT (IISER Mohali), PU's UG law test (UILS), AIL LET, CUET or university tests for other courses.
- Register for counselling: JoSAA/CSAB for PEC; JAC Chandigarh for UIET and CCA; MCC plus UT counselling for GMCH; Punjab counselling for Mohali state colleges.
- Apply on the PU or UT portal for BA/B.Sc/B.Com seats in city colleges. Admission is merit-based, with separate lists for UT and general pools.
- Keep certificates ready: Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, residence or domicile proof, category certificate and income certificate for fee concessions.
- Track every merit list and pay the seat fee before the deadline, or the seat moves to the next candidate.
How to choose the right college in Chandigarh
- Match the ranking to your stream. A college's NIRF College rank says little about its engineering or law teaching. Compare within one category.
- Check the location. "Chandigarh" on a website may mean Gharuan, Landran or Rajpura. Daily travel time matters.
- Compare total cost. Government and aided colleges in the city charge much less than private universities in Mohali.
- Look at outcomes. NIRF data files show median salaries and higher-study numbers for each institute.
- Apply in tiers. Mix dream, realistic and safe options in the same cycle.
- Check domicile benefits. UT pool seats can make PEC, UIET, CCA and GMCH much easier to get for Chandigarh residents.
Scholarships for students in Chandigarh
Good colleges in Chandigarh are affordable, but hostel, books and travel still add up. Students can apply for:
- National Scholarship Portal (NSP): central schemes such as post-matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/minority students and the Central Sector Scheme for top Class 12 scorers.
- Chandigarh Administration and Punjab/Haryana schemes: post-matric and merit scholarships for residents; check the respective state scholarship portals.
- Institute support: fee waivers at PU and PEC, merit scholarships at Chandigarh University and Chitkara, and stipends at IISER and NIPER.
- Private and national exams: the AISEE scholarship is a national exam that helps Class 12 and college students fund engineering, medical and other degrees.
Engineering aspirants can also browse scholarships for engineering students to plan fees for B.Tech in the tricity.
