List of IIIT Colleges in India 2026: All 25 IIITs + NIRF Ranks

Looking for a complete list of IIIT colleges in India for 2026? India has 25 Indian Institutes of Information Technology set up under the IIIT Acts: 5 fully funded by the Ministry of Education and 20 run on a public–private partnership (PPP) model. Alongside them sit well-known state and deemed IIITs such as IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi and IIIT Bangalore, which carry the "IIIT" name but follow their own rules.

This guide puts all of them in one place. You get each institute's state, type, founding year and its NIRF 2025 Engineering rank or band. We also explain how IIITs differ from IITs and NITs, how admission works, and what fees and placements roughly look like.

Quick answer: India has 25 IIITs under the IIIT Acts (2014 and 2017): 5 centrally funded (Allahabad, ABV-IIITM Gwalior, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIITDM Kancheepuram, IIITDM Kurnool) and 20 PPP IIITs. Most admit B.Tech students through JEE Main and JoSAA. State and deemed IIITs such as IIIT Hyderabad, Delhi and Bangalore run separate admissions. In NIRF 2025 Engineering, IIIT Hyderabad (38) is the top-ranked IIIT.

What is an IIIT, and how is it different from an IIT or NIT?

IIITs were created to build India's talent in information technology, computer science, electronics and design. Most of their seats are in CSE, IT, ECE and related fields. IITs and NITs are broader engineering institutes with civil, mechanical, chemical and many other branches.

1. Centrally funded IIITs (Ministry of Education) – 5

These five institutes are fully funded and run by the Ministry of Education. They are the oldest IIITs under the Act and generally have bigger campuses and more research activity.

Note: "Not in list" means we could not find the institute in the NIRF 2025 Engineering lists we checked (ranks 1–100 and bands up to 201–300). Many newer IIITs are young and may not have applied yet, or did not make the cut. That says little about the teaching itself. Campus locations can change as permanent campuses open, so check the institute's own website.

3. State and deemed IIITs (outside the IIIT Acts)

These institutes use the IIIT name but are set up by state governments or as deemed universities. Several of them are among the strongest IT institutes in India.

IIIT Hyderabad is the highest-ranked IIIT in NIRF 2025 and is known for its research-heavy dual-degree programmes. Official website: iiit.ac.in. IIIT Delhi climbed to 63rd in NIRF 2025 Engineering, from 85th in 2024. Official website: iiitd.ac.in.

Some other institutes also use "IIIT" in their names. Examples include the RGUKT IIIT campuses in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which admit students after Class 10 for a six-year programme, and private institutes such as IIIT Pune (Hinjewadi). They are not part of the central IIIT system, so check their approvals and admission rules separately.

How IIIT admission works in 2026

For the 25 IIITs under the Acts, admission is centralised and based on JEE Main. JEE Advanced is not needed.

  1. Take JEE Main (January and/or April session) conducted by NTA. Your best NTA score is used to prepare your All India Rank.
  2. Meet the Class 12 criterion: generally 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. Check the current JoSAA business rules.
  3. Register for JoSAA counselling at josaa.nic.in and fill choices for IIITs along with NITs and GFTIs.
  4. Seat allotment happens over several rounds. Accept the seat, pay the seat acceptance fee and upload your documents.
  5. CSAB special rounds fill any seats left vacant after JoSAA.
  6. Report to the institute for document verification and fee payment.

State and deemed IIITs work differently:

  • IIIT Hyderabad runs several channels: its own UGEE exam (followed by an interview) for research-focused dual degrees, a JEE Main channel, plus Olympiad, DASA and other special routes.
  • IIIT Delhi admits B.Tech students through JEE Main ranks in JAC Delhi counselling, which reserves most seats for Delhi-region candidates.
  • IIIT Bangalore uses JEE Main scores but runs its own application and counselling. It is not part of JoSAA.

Check before you apply: Application windows, eligibility percentages and seat splits change every year. Always confirm on the institute's official admissions page and the current JoSAA, JAC Delhi or UGEE information brochure.

IIIT fees and placements: what to expect

Fees vary widely between IIIT types. The figures below are approximate, based on the 2025–26 fee structures reported publicly:

  • Central (MoE) IIITs: roughly ₹8–12 lakh for the full four-year B.Tech, including hostel. Students from families with lower incomes, and SC/ST/PwD students, often get partial or full tuition waivers.
  • PPP IIITs: tuition is often around ₹85,000–₹1.5 lakh per semester, so the four-year total including hostel is commonly ₹9–14 lakh.
  • IIIT Hyderabad: tuition of about ₹4–4.5 lakh per year, with hostel and mess charged separately.
  • IIIT Delhi: one of the costlier IIITs. Total B.Tech fees are reported at roughly ₹20–24 lakh.

Placements: Top IIITs have a strong record in software, product and core-electronics roles. CSE and IT branches usually get the best offers. Published "highest packages" are often one-off international offers, so look at the median salary and placement percentage in each institute's NIRF data file. Newer PPP IIITs have smaller batches and a shorter track record, and results can vary a lot from year to year.

How to choose the right IIIT

Tip: At a similar JEE Main rank, a CSE seat at a newer IIIT can be a better fit than a less-preferred branch at an older NIT, or the other way round. Decide on your priorities first: branch, campus or location.

  • Check the campus status: confirm whether the IIIT runs from its permanent campus or a temporary one.
  • Read the NIRF data file: every participating institute publishes median salaries, placement numbers and faculty strength on its NIRF page.
  • Compare branches: some IIITs offer CSE with AI/data science, ECE with VLSI, or design programmes. Pick the one that matches your interests.
  • Look at past closing ranks on the JoSAA website for your category and gender pool.
  • Count the full cost: add hostel, mess and travel to tuition, then compare it with the fee waivers and scholarships you can get.

Scholarships for IIIT students

IIIT fees are manageable for most families once scholarships are counted. Central IIITs follow government fee-waiver rules based on category and family income. Many PPP and state IIITs offer merit-cum-means waivers too.

  • National Scholarship Portal (NSP): central schemes such as post-matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/minority students and the Central Sector Scheme for college students.
  • State scholarships: many states support their domicile students even when they study in another state.
  • AISEE: you can also take the All India Scholarship Entrance Examination. See our guide to scholarships for engineering students and the important exam dates.

Frequently asked questions

How many IIITs are there in India in 2026?

There are 25 IIITs under the IIIT Acts: 5 funded by the Ministry of Education and 20 on the PPP model. There are also several state and deemed IIITs, such as IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi, IIIT Bangalore, IIIT Bhubaneswar and IIIT Naya Raipur, which are outside the Acts.

Which is the best IIIT in India as per NIRF 2025?

IIIT Hyderabad is the top IIIT in the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking at 38th. It is followed by IIIT Delhi (63rd), IIIT Bangalore (69th) and ABV-IIITM Gwalior (96th). Among the five central IIITs, ABV-IIITM Gwalior is the highest ranked.

Is JEE Advanced required for IIIT admission?

No. IIITs admit through JEE Main ranks, mostly via JoSAA and CSAB counselling. JEE Advanced is needed only for the IITs. IIIT Hyderabad also has non-JEE channels such as UGEE.

Is an IIIT better than an NIT?

It depends on the institute and branch. Top IIITs are excellent for CSE and IT. Established NITs offer a wider choice of branches and larger alumni networks. Compare specific institutes using NIRF data, closing ranks and placement reports instead of the label alone.

Do IIITs have a home-state quota?

The 25 IIITs under the Acts do not have a home-state quota in JoSAA; seats are allotted on All India Rank. IIIT Delhi (through JAC Delhi) and some state IIITs do reserve seats for their state's candidates.

What is the difference between a central IIIT and a PPP IIIT?

Central IIITs are fully funded by the Ministry of Education. PPP IIITs were built with funding from the Centre, a state government and industry partners. Both are Institutes of National Importance that award their own degrees, but PPP IIITs often charge higher tuition.

Are IIIT degrees valid for government jobs and higher studies?

Yes. IIITs under the Acts are Institutes of National Importance, and IIIT Hyderabad, Delhi and Bangalore are recognised university-level institutions. Their B.Tech degrees are accepted for GATE, PSU jobs, civil services and admission to master's programmes in India and abroad.

Conclusion: picking from the list of IIIT colleges in India

This list of IIIT colleges in India covers 5 central IIITs, 20 PPP IIITs and the leading state and deemed IIITs. IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi, IIIT Bangalore and ABV-IIITM Gwalior lead the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking. For most students, the route in is a good JEE Main rank followed by JoSAA, while IIIT Hyderabad, Delhi and Bangalore need separate applications. Your next step: shortlist 8–10 IIITs using past closing ranks, check each official fee page, and line up scholarships so the cost does not decide your choice for you.
