List of Top Universities in Assam 2026: NIRF Ranks, Fees

Searching for the top universities in Assam for 2026? Assam is the education hub of North-East India. It has an IIT, an NIT, two central universities, an AIIMS, a national law university and some of the oldest state universities in the region. This guide lists the best universities and institutes in the state with their latest NIRF ranks, courses, admission routes and approximate fees.

All ranks below come from the NIRF 2025 India Rankings, released by the Ministry of Education on 4 September 2025. That is the most recent edition we could confirm with full results at the time of writing. Several good Assam institutes do not appear in any NIRF list, and where that is true we say so plainly.

Quick answer: The top universities and institutes in Assam in 2026 are IIT Guwahati (NIRF 2025 Overall rank 11, Engineering rank 8), Gauhati University (University rank 33, Overall rank 52), NIT Silchar (Engineering rank 50), Tezpur University (University rank 79) and Assam University, Silchar (University rank 97). For specialised fields, look at NIPER Guwahati (Pharmacy 12), Assam Agricultural University (Agriculture 18) and NLU Assam (Law 35).

The table of top universities in Assam orders institutes by their best NIRF 2025 result, and then by national standing for those that are not ranked. Keep in mind that NIRF ranks each category separately, so an Engineering rank cannot be compared directly with a Law or Pharmacy rank.

They offer engineering, management, nursing, pharmacy and allied health courses. Neither appears in the NIRF 2025 Overall or University lists. Before you join, compare fees, placement records and approvals carefully.

New for management students: Assam now has its own IIM. Parliament approved IIM Guwahati, the country's 22nd IIM, in August 2025. It is starting its MBA programme from a temporary campus while the permanent campus in Kamrup district is built, so it has no NIRF rank yet. Admission is expected through CAT; check the institute's official website for the current intake. See our list of all IIMs.

How admission works in Assam universities

Each type of institute uses a different entrance route. Here is the usual sequence:

  1. Pick your stream and course: engineering, medicine, law, agriculture, pharmacy or general UG.
  2. Write the right exam: JEE Main (NITs, IIITs, Tezpur B.Tech), JEE Advanced (IIT Guwahati), NEET UG (AIIMS Guwahati and the medical colleges), CLAT (NLU Assam), CUET UG (central universities and many state ones) or the Assam CEE (state engineering colleges such as Assam Engineering College and Jorhat Engineering College).
  3. Register for counselling: JoSAA/CSAB for IITs, NITs and IIITs; MCC or the Assam state counselling for medical seats; CLAT counselling for NLUs.
  4. Use the North-East or home-state quota where it applies: NIT Silchar and some central institutes keep seats for the region, so check the rules.
  5. Verify documents and pay the seat fee by the deadline, or the seat may lapse.

Practising with mock papers helps a lot in these exams. You can try the AISEE free test series to check where you stand before the real tests.

How to choose the right university in Assam

When comparing the top universities in Assam, a high rank matters, but the right fit for you depends on your course, budget and career plans.

  • Match the category rank to your course: for law, look at NIRF Law; for pharmacy, NIRF Pharmacy, and so on.
  • Look at location and connectivity: Guwahati has the most options, while Silchar, Tezpur, Jorhat and Dibrugarh offer calmer campuses at lower living costs.
  • Compare total cost: include hostel, mess and travel, not just tuition.
  • Read placement reports: NIRF data files and institute placement brochures show median salaries.
  • Check approvals: confirm UGC, AICTE, PCI, NMC or BCI approval for the programme you want.

Tip: If you are aiming for engineering, apply to IIT Guwahati, NIT Silchar, IIIT Guwahati and Tezpur University through JEE, and keep the Assam CEE as a backup for state colleges.

Check before paying: fees, seat matrices and cut-offs change every year. The fee figures in this article are approximate (2025–26) and only a guide. Always confirm on the official website or the latest prospectus.
