Pharmacy courses in India: D.Pharm, B.Pharm, Pharm.D and M.Pharm
Every pharmacy course that leads to registration as a pharmacist must be approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), the statutory body under the Pharmacy Act, 1948. Before you pay any fee, check that your college and course appear on PCI's approved list for the current year.
| Course | Duration | Eligibility (general) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| D.Pharm | 2 years + practical training | Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Maths | Quick entry to work as a registered pharmacist (retail/hospital) |
| B.Pharm | 4 years (lateral entry to 2nd year after D.Pharm) | Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Maths | Industry, research, regulatory and higher study |
| Pharm.D | 6 years (5 years study + 1 year internship) | Class 12 with PCB/PCM | Clinical and hospital pharmacy, patient care |
| M.Pharm | 2 years | B.Pharm from a PCI-approved college | Specialisation (pharmaceutics, pharmacology, QA, etc.), R&D |
Note on the D.Pharm exit exam: PCI notified a Diploma in Pharmacy Exit Examination in 2022, but the exam has been deferred repeatedly. In early 2026 PCI asked State Pharmacy Councils to issue registration to eligible D.Pharm pass-outs. Check pci.nic.in for the latest position.
Planning B.Tech, MBBS or another degree after Class 12? Take the AISEE scholarship exam and you could win up to 100% tuition fee scholarship at AISEE participating colleges across India.
How admission to top pharmacy colleges works

There is no single national entrance exam for B.Pharm. Each state and many universities run their own process. Here is the typical path:
- Pass Class 12 with PCB or PCM. Most colleges want English as a subject and a minimum aggregate (often 45–50% for general category).
- Write the right entrance test. Common ones are MHT CET (Maharashtra), KCET (Karnataka), AP/TS EAPCET, WBJEE, PU CET (UG) for Panjab University, BITSAT for BITS Pilani, and CUET UG for several central and state universities. Some private universities use their own tests or Class 12 merit.
- Register for counselling. States run centralised rounds (for example DTE Maharashtra CAP). Deemed and private universities hold their own counselling.
- For M.Pharm, take GPAT. The Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test is conducted by NBEMS. GPAT 2026 was held on 7 March 2026 and results came out on 7 April 2026. A valid GPAT score is needed for the PG scholarship/stipend, and many colleges use it for admission.
- For NIPERs, take NIPER JEE. This joint entrance exam covers M.S. (Pharm), M.Pharm, MBA (Pharm) and PhD seats at all seven NIPERs. The 2026 exam was held in June 2026.
Verify before you apply: Entrance exams, seat shares and fees change every year. Read the official information brochure of the college and the state counselling authority before filling any form.
Fees and career scope after pharmacy
Fees vary widely with the type of institute. As a rough guide (approx., 2025-26):
- Government/public colleges: about ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh per year for B.Pharm.
- Private and deemed universities: about ₹1 lakh to ₹3 lakh per year; premium institutes such as BITS Pilani cost more.
- NIPERs (PG): low tuition with possible stipends for eligible students.
Pharmacy graduates work across the healthcare and medicines industry. Popular roles include:
- Registered pharmacist in hospitals, clinics and retail chains
- Quality control and quality assurance in drug manufacturing
- Research and development, formulation and analytical labs
- Clinical research, pharmacovigilance and medical writing
- Regulatory affairs and drug inspector posts (through state/central recruitment)
- Pharma marketing, sales and business roles (often after an MBA in pharma management)
Starting salaries for B.Pharm graduates are typically modest (often about ₹2.5–5 lakh a year, approx.). M.Pharm, M.S. (Pharm) and NIPER graduates usually get better R&D and corporate offers.
How to choose the right pharmacy college
A high NIRF rank is a good signal, but it is not the only thing that matters. Use these checks:
- PCI approval: Confirm the course and intake are approved by PCI for the year you join.
- Course offered: NIPERs are PG-only. If you want B.Pharm or Pharm.D, pick a college that offers it.
- Hospital tie-ups: For Pharm.D or clinical careers, choose a college with an attached hospital.
- Research and labs: Look at publications, funded projects and instrument facilities if you plan R&D work.
- Total cost: Add tuition, hostel and exam fees for all years, not just year one.
- Placements: Ask for the latest placement report and the median package, not just the highest.
Tip: If budget matters, public options such as Panjab University (UIPS), ICT Mumbai, DPSRU and state government pharmacy colleges give strong value. Also, apply to more than one state CET to widen your choices.
Scholarships for pharmacy students
Pharmacy education can be expensive, especially in private universities. The good news is that several schemes can reduce the cost:
- National Scholarship Portal (NSP): Central schemes such as post-matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/minority students and the Central Sector Scheme for college students.
- State scholarships: Most states offer fee reimbursement or merit scholarships for professional courses, including B.Pharm.
- GPAT-linked PG scholarship: M.Pharm students with a valid GPAT score at approved institutes can get a monthly scholarship as per AICTE/PCI rules.
- Private and merit scholarships: Many universities give fee waivers for high entrance scores. National-level exams like the AISEE scholarship also help students fund college education.
