List of Colleges in Kolkata 2026: Top Colleges & Universities

Searching for an up-to-date list of colleges in Kolkata for 2026? Kolkata has one of India's oldest and deepest higher-education ecosystems: an IIM, a national law university, two top-20 state universities, some of the country's oldest medical colleges and several undergraduate colleges that rank in India's top 10. This guide groups the top colleges and universities in Kolkata by stream. Each table gives the type, NIRF 2025 rank (if any), main courses, admission route, locality and official website.

Quick answer: The highest-ranked institutes in Kolkata in NIRF 2025 are Jadavpur University (University #9, Overall #18), IIM Calcutta (Management #7), WBNUJS (Law #4), IIEST Shibpur in Howrah (Engineering #54, Architecture #4), IPGMER-SSKM (Medical #23) and St. Xavier's College (College #8). Many respected colleges, such as NRS, RG Kar and Heritage, are not ranked.

We use NIRF 2025 (India Rankings 2025, released by the Ministry of Education on 4 September 2025) because it is the latest edition we could cross-check in two independent sources. The old version of this page promised "contact details". Phone numbers and e-mail IDs change often, so we list each institute's official website and locality instead. Use the "Contact us" page on that website for current numbers.

The order below is editorial. It mixes streams, so a rank in one NIRF category cannot be compared directly with a rank in another.

Kolkata's universities run their own departments and, in the case of Calcutta University, also affiliate a huge network of colleges. Fees at the state universities are among the lowest in India.

Jadavpur University is the stand-out: it is a state university, yet it ranks 9th among all universities in India and 18th overall, with very low fees. University of Calcutta is one of India's oldest universities; most of the city's undergraduate colleges listed later are affiliated to it. IIEST Shibpur sits across the Hooghly in Howrah, about 30–40 minutes from central Kolkata.

Engineering colleges in Kolkata

Besides Jadavpur and IIEST, Kolkata has a large number of private engineering colleges affiliated to MAKAUT. Only a few of them appear in NIRF 2025, so check placements and accreditation yourself. Our detailed list of top engineering colleges in West Bengal covers cut-offs and colleges outside the city.

Medical colleges in Kolkata

Kolkata has five large government medical colleges, all affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS). MBBS admission is only through NEET UG: 15% All India Quota seats via MCC counselling and the rest via West Bengal state counselling. Only two of them are in the NIRF 2025 Medical top 50.

How admission works in Kolkata

The entrance route depends on the stream and on whether the college is central, state or private.

  1. Engineering: State-quota B.Tech seats at Jadavpur, RCCIIT and MAKAUT colleges are filled through WBJEE counselling run by WBJEEB. IIEST Shibpur fills seats through JEE Main + JoSAA. Private colleges also keep some JEE Main and management-quota seats.
  2. Medical: Every MBBS and BDS seat needs a NEET UG score. You register for MCC counselling (All India Quota) and West Bengal state counselling separately.
  3. Arts, science and commerce: Most government and government-aided colleges admit UG students on Class 12 marks through the West Bengal Centralised Admission Portal (WBCAP). Presidency University uses PUBDET. Minority and autonomous colleges, such as St. Xavier's and Loreto, often run their own process.
  4. Management: IIM Calcutta takes CAT; other B-schools accept CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT or GMAT, followed by interviews.
  5. Law and research: WBNUJS uses CLAT. ISI runs its own admission test, and IISER Kolkata uses the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT).

Check before you apply: Seat matrices, cut-offs, fees and even the admission route can change every year. Treat this page as a starting point and confirm everything on the official website and the counselling portal for 2026.

How to choose the right college in Kolkata

  • Match the ranking to your stream. A College-category rank tells you about UG arts and science teaching, not engineering placements. Compare like with like.
  • Do not dismiss unranked colleges. Many old government medical and degree colleges simply do not take part in every NIRF category. Look at faculty, results and alumni.
  • Check affiliation and approvals. Engineering colleges should be AICTE-approved and affiliated to MAKAUT or a university; medical colleges should be on the NMC list.
  • Factor in the commute. Joka, Rahara, Narendrapur, Shibpur and Mohanpur are far apart. A two-hour daily commute adds up over four years.
  • Look at total cost, not tuition alone. State colleges are cheap, but hostel seats are limited. Private colleges can cost several lakh rupees over a degree.

Tip: Make a three-level shortlist: "dream" (e.g. Jadavpur, IIEST, St. Xavier's), "realistic" and "safe". Fill counselling choices in that order so you never end up without a seat.

Scholarships for students in Kolkata

Low fees at state colleges help, but hostel, books and travel still cost money. West Bengal students can apply for the state's Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship and the West Bengal Student Credit Card education-loan scheme. Central scholarships for minority, SC/ST and OBC students are listed on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). Many institutes, including IIM Calcutta and the private engineering colleges, also run their own merit or need-based fee waivers.

You can also take the AISEE exam for a merit-based award that is not tied to one state; see our guide to scholarships for college students for eligibility and dates.
