Engineering and technology colleges in Lucknow

No Lucknow institute is in the NIRF 2025 Engineering top 100, so the choice here rests on placements, branch and fees. IIIT Lucknow is the most sought-after option for computer science. IET Lucknow is the city's best-known government engineering college.

IIIT Lucknow

Medical and dental colleges in Lucknow

Lucknow is one of India's major medical education centres. Two of its institutes are in the NIRF 2025 Medical top 10.

Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS)

SGPGIMS was created in 1983 by an act of the state legislature. It is mainly a postgraduate and super-speciality institute, so it is a target for doctors after MBBS rather than for Class 12 students.

• Established: 1983
• NIRF 2025: Medical rank 5
• Popular courses: DM, MCh, MD, PhD, B.Sc Nursing and paramedical courses

Pharmacy, science and research institutes

Lucknow is home to several national research laboratories. These do not offer regular undergraduate courses, but they host PhD and project positions and are useful for science students planning research careers.

Arts, science and commerce colleges in Lucknow

Many students want a BA, BSc or BCom at a reputed college rather than a university department. These colleges are affiliated to the University of Lucknow, so degrees and exams follow LU rules. None of them is in the NIRF 2025 College top 100.

Isabella Thoburn College was founded in 1886 and describes itself as the first women's college in South Asia. Lucknow Christian Degree College grew from a small school started in 1862 in the old city. Both are older than the University of Lucknow itself.

How admission works in Lucknow colleges

Your route depends on the stream. Most good colleges in the city admit through a national or state exam, not direct merit alone.

1. Engineering: Take JEE Main. IIIT Lucknow admits through JoSAA; IET Lucknow and AKTU-affiliated colleges fill seats through UPTAC counselling. Private universities may also run their own tests.
2. Medical and dental: NEET-UG is compulsory for MBBS and BDS. Seats at KGMU, RMLIMS and private colleges are filled through MCC (All India Quota) and UP state counselling.
3. Central university courses: BBAU uses CUET-UG for undergraduate courses and CUET-PG for most postgraduate courses.
4. Law: CLAT for RMLNLU; CUET for BBAU law; LU runs its own process for LLB.
5. Management: CAT for IIM Lucknow; CAT, XAT, CMAT or MAT for private B-schools such as Jaipuria.
6. Arts, science and commerce: Follow the University of Lucknow admission notices for its departments and affiliated colleges.

How to choose the right college in Lucknow

A big name is not always the best fit. Match the college to your goal, budget and exam score.

• Compare within one NIRF category. A law school should be judged against law schools, not against medical institutes.
• Check recognition. Confirm UGC, AICTE, NMC, NDC, PCI or BCI approval for your exact course.
• Look at total cost. Add tuition, hostel and exam fees. Government institutes are usually far cheaper than private universities.
• Read placement reports. Use the institute's own NIRF data or placement report, not advertisements.
• Think about location. Campuses are spread from Chowk to Gomti Nagar Extension and beyond the city limits, so check travel or hostel options.

Scholarships for students in Lucknow

Fees can be the deciding factor, especially at private universities. Several schemes can reduce the cost:

• National Scholarship Portal (NSP): central schemes such as the Central Sector Scheme and post-matric scholarships for eligible categories.
• Uttar Pradesh scholarship portal: the state's pre- and post-matric scholarships and fee reimbursement for eligible UP domicile students.
• Institute support: IIM Lucknow, BBAU and private universities offer need-based or merit-based fee waivers.
• AISEE: the All India Scholarship Entrance Examination offers merit scholarships for students joining participating colleges. See the details of the AISEE scholarship for college students.
