Top Engineering Colleges in Kerala 2026: NIRF Ranks, Fees

Looking for the top engineering colleges in Kerala for 2026? The state's strongest B.Tech options are NIT Calicut, IIST Thiruvananthapuram and IIT Palakkad at the national level, followed by long-established KTU colleges such as College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET), TKM College of Engineering and Rajagiri. This guide lists them with NIRF 2025 ranks, admission routes, approximate fees and tips for choosing.

We have used the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking (released by the Ministry of Education in September 2025) wherever a Kerala college appears in it. Since most state colleges sit outside the NIRF top 100, we have also used the KIRF 2025 Engineering ranking, the Kerala Institutional Ranking Framework run by the Kerala State Higher Education Council.

Quick answer: As per NIRF 2025 (Engineering), the top engineering colleges in Kerala are NIT Calicut (rank 21), IIST Thiruvananthapuram (rank 61) and IIT Palakkad (rank 64). Among KTU-affiliated colleges, CET Thiruvananthapuram (NIRF band 101–150, KIRF 2025 rank 1), TKM Kollam and Rajagiri Kochi lead. Admission is through JEE Main/JoSAA (NIT, IIIT), JEE Advanced (IIT, IIST) or KEAM (state colleges).

Approx. fees for private KTU colleges: typically around ₹75,000 to ₹1.5 lakh per year for tuition, depending on the college and seat type (2025–26). Placements at these colleges are mainly in IT services, with core companies visiting for selected branches; ask each college for its verified branch-wise placement report.

Verify before you pay: Fees, seat matrices and placement figures change every year. Always confirm them on the college's official website or the CEE Kerala prospectus, not on third-party portals.

How admission works for engineering in Kerala

Your entrance exam decides which group of colleges you can apply to. Most students write more than one exam to keep options open.

  1. JEE Main (NTA): required for NIT Calicut and IIIT Kottayam through JoSAA counselling. It is also the qualifying step for JEE Advanced.
  2. JEE Advanced: required for IIT Palakkad (via JoSAA) and for IIST, which runs its own application and rank list based on JEE Advanced scores.
  3. KEAM (CEE Kerala): the state exam for government, aided and private KTU colleges. It is a computer-based test of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (150 questions, about 600 marks). The engineering rank list combines the normalised KEAM score with normalised Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics on a 50:50 basis.
  4. CUSAT CAT: for B.Tech at CUSAT's School of Engineering and its affiliated campuses.
  5. AEEE / JEE Main: for Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham campuses, as per its yearly notification.
  6. Counselling and allotment: after results, register for JoSAA (josaa.nic.in) or the KEAM centralised allotment on cee.kerala.gov.in, fill choices carefully and pay the fee before the deadline.

Note: KEAM's weightage rules for Class 12 marks were revised in recent years. Read the latest CEE Kerala prospectus for the exact formula, eligibility (generally 45% in PCM for general category) and reservation rules.

How to choose the right engineering college in Kerala

A high rank is useful, but the right fit depends on your branch, budget and career plans.

  • Branch over brand at the margin: a branch you enjoy at a strong KTU college can be better than an unwanted branch at a higher-ranked institute.
  • Check the ranking edition: use NIRF for national comparison and KIRF 2025 for comparing Kerala colleges, which NIRF often does not rank.
  • Look at the total cost: add hostel, mess, transport and exam fees to tuition.
  • Ask for real placement data: median salary and percentage placed per branch are more useful than the highest package.
  • Visit if you can: labs, library, faculty and student clubs say a lot about daily life.

Tip: Fill more KEAM options than you think you need. Safe options lower in your list protect you if cut-offs rise in a given year.

Scholarships and funding for engineering students in Kerala

Many students can bring their costs down sharply with merit and need-based support.

  • Fee waivers at NITs/IITs: full or partial tuition waivers based on category and family income.
  • National Scholarship Portal: central schemes such as post-matric scholarships and AICTE schemes (Pragati for girls, Saksham for students with disabilities) are listed on scholarships.gov.in.
  • Kerala state schemes: e-Grantz for eligible SC/ST/OBC and other students, plus minority scholarships run by the state government.
  • Private scholarships: the AISEE scholarship for engineering students rewards merit through a national exam, and you can explore other options in our guide to scholarships after 12th in India.
