Paramedical Courses in India 2026: List, Fees, Eligibility & Jobs

Paramedical courses in India train the technologists, therapists and nurses who run labs, scanners, operation theatres, ICUs, dialysis units and rehabilitation clinics. In 2026 these programmes are officially called allied and healthcare courses, and they offer a quicker, more affordable route into healthcare than MBBS, with jobs available in both government and private hospitals.

This guide lists the main degree, diploma and certificate options, with their duration, eligibility, approximate fees and typical jobs. It also covers the NCAHP Act, 2021, the leading colleges, how admission works and what you can realistically expect to earn.

Quick answer: The most popular paramedical courses in India are B.Sc Medical Lab Technology, Radiology & Imaging, Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology, Optometry, BPT (Physiotherapy), B.Sc Nursing and BASLP. Degrees take 3 to 4.5 years after Class 12 (usually PCB). Admission is through institute tests such as the AIIMS Paramedical exam, through NEET UG (JIPMER, many nursing seats), or on Class 12 merit. Starting salaries are commonly about ₹2.5–5 lakh a year.

What are paramedical (allied and healthcare) courses?

Allied health professionals are trained experts who work alongside doctors. They test samples, take X-rays and CT scans, run heart-lung machines, assist anaesthetists, give therapy and care for patients round the clock. Without them, a hospital cannot function.

In July 2025 the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) asked states, universities and colleges to stop using the word "paramedical" and use "allied and healthcare" instead. You will still see both terms on college websites, so treat them as the same thing when you search for courses.

Nursing is regulated separately by the Indian Nursing Council (INC), and speech and hearing courses by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Most students still group them with paramedical courses, so we include them here.

The main courses explained

Diagnostic courses: MLT and Radiology

Medical Lab Technology covers biochemistry, microbiology, pathology and blood banking. Graduates run the tests that doctors base diagnoses on. Radiology and Imaging Technology trains you to operate X-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound equipment safely and to the right standard. Imaging technologists who specialise in CT or MRI are in strong demand in diagnostic chains.

Surgical and critical-care courses: OTT, Anaesthesia, Cardiac Care, Dialysis, Respiratory Therapy, EMT

These courses prepare you for high-pressure clinical areas. OT and anaesthesia technologists prepare theatres and equipment and monitor patients during surgery. Cardiac care technologists work in cath labs and ECG/echo units. Dialysis technologists run kidney dialysis, and respiratory therapists manage ventilators. EMTs give life-saving care in ambulances and emergency rooms. Shift work is common, and so are job openings.

Rehabilitation courses: BPT, BOT and BASLP

Physiotherapy (BPT) treats movement problems after injury, surgery or stroke, and many physiotherapists later open their own clinics. Occupational therapy (BOT) helps people regain everyday skills, and paediatric and neuro specialisations are common. BASLP trains audiologists and speech-language pathologists. It is recognised by the RCI, and the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru, is the best-known institute for it.

Vision: Optometry

Optometrists test vision, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and screen patients for eye disease. They work in eye hospitals, optical chains and with lens manufacturers. B.Optom is one of the few allied courses that some institutes, including AIIMS, open to PCM students.

Nursing: B.Sc, GNM and ANM

B.Sc Nursing (4 years) is now the main entry route and the qualification most government recruiters prefer. GNM is a 3-year diploma, and some states add an internship to it. The INC decided in 2019 to phase GNM out in favour of B.Sc Nursing, but several states still admit students to it. ANM is a shorter diploma, usually 2 years, focused on community and maternal health. Haryana and Andhra Pradesh have moved B.Sc Nursing admission to NEET UG from 2026-27.

Health information and nutrition

Medical Record / Health Information Management suits students who prefer data to bedside work. Hospitals, insurers and health-IT firms need people who understand records, medical coding and digital health systems. Nutrition & Dietetics leads to clinical dietitian roles in hospitals, wellness firms and food companies.

Paramedical diploma and certificate courses after 10th and 12th

If you want to start work sooner, there are shorter programmes. They pay less and offer fewer chances of promotion, but you can later move up to a degree through lateral entry or distance routes where these are allowed.

CourseAfterDurationTypical role
Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (DMLT)12th (PCB)2 yrsLab technician

Beware of unrecognised institutes: The Supreme Court has called the spread of illegal allied healthcare institutes "a serious concern". Choose diplomas run by a government hospital, a state paramedical or allied council, or a recognised university, and check recognition before you pay any fees.

The NCAHP Act, 2021 and where it stands in 2026

The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021 came into force on 25 May 2021. It brings 56 allied and healthcare professions in 10 categories under one national regulator, with State Allied and Healthcare Councils for registration. Doctors already work under the NMC system in a similar way. Nursing remains under the INC.

  • Curricula: NCAHP has released competency-based model curricula, which are mandatory from 2026.
  • NEET for BPT/BOT: NCAHP first linked BPT and BOT admission to NEET UG. In a letter dated 2 March 2026 it deferred this to 2027-28, so 2026-27 admissions use Class 12 PCB merit (50% for General/EWS, 40% for reserved categories). Some institutes, such as CMC Vellore, had already asked BPT/BOT applicants to take NEET UG 2026.
  • Implementation gaps: On 28 July 2026 the Supreme Court found that its 2024 directions had "still not been fully complied with". It ordered the Commission and all states and UTs to file compliance affidavits, and listed the case for 22 September 2026. Only about 14–15 states had set up their councils at that point.

What this means for you: Over the next few years, registration with your State Allied and Healthcare Council will become important for jobs. Choose a course and college that follow NCAHP norms, and keep an eye on the NEET requirement if you plan to apply for BPT or BOT in 2027.

How admission to paramedical courses works

  1. Choose your subjects early: Most allied degrees need Physics, Chemistry and Biology (plus English) in Class 12. A few, such as Optometry and Radiology at AIIMS, also accept PCM.
  2. Take the right tests: Use the AIIMS Paramedical exam for AIIMS seats, PGIMER's test for Chandigarh, the CMC entrance test for Vellore, and the AIISH test for BASLP. Write NEET UG too, because JIPMER, a growing number of nursing seats and, from 2027-28, BPT/BOT need it.
  3. Consider CUET UG and state counselling: Some central and state universities admit students to allied B.Sc programmes through CUET UG or state entrance and counselling processes. Check each university's notice.
  4. Apply on time: Most applications open between February and April, and exams run from May to July. Track official sites such as aiimsexams.ac.in.
  5. Counselling and documents: Keep your marksheets, category and EWS certificates, and medical fitness certificate ready for seat allotment.

Career scope and starting salaries

Demand is growing because of diagnostic chains, new AIIMS campuses, private hospital expansion and ageing patients who need rehabilitation. Pay starts modestly in private jobs and rises quickly with specialisation, such as CT/MRI, cath lab or ICU work.

RoleApprox. entry salary (private)With experience
Medical lab technologist₹2.5–4 lakh/yrup to ~₹6 lakh/yr
Radiology / imaging technologist₹2.8–4.5 lakh/yr₹5–9 lakh/yr (CT/MRI)
Physiotherapist₹3–4 lakh/yr₹8–12 lakh/yr or own clinic
Nursing officer (central govt., e.g. AIIMS)Pay Level 7, basic ₹44,900/month + allowancesup to ₹1,42,400 basic

Sources: salary guides from FindMyCollege and JKKN, Payscale early-career data (which is lower, around ₹2–2.75 lakh/yr for radiography technologists), and the 7th Pay Commission scale for AIIMS nursing officers. In metro cities, entry pay is often ₹18,000–40,000 a month. These are indicative ranges, not guarantees.

Higher studies such as an M.Sc, MPT, MOT or MASLP lead to specialist, teaching and research roles. Many graduates also work abroad after passing the licensing exams of the destination country.

How to choose the right paramedical course

Tip: Spend a day in a hospital department, such as the lab, radiology or physiotherapy, before you decide. The daily work in each field is very different.

  • Match the course to your temperament: choose OT, EMT or ICU work if you handle pressure well, the lab or health information if you prefer detail work, and rehabilitation if you are patient and enjoy talking to people.
  • Prefer hospital-attached colleges: clinical exposure matters more than a glossy campus.
  • Check recognition: look for NCAHP/state council compliance, INC approval for nursing and RCI approval for BASLP.
  • Compare total cost: include hostel and internship fees, not just tuition.
  • Ask about placements: ask which hospitals hired last year's batch and at what pay.

Scholarships and funding

Government institutes such as AIIMS and JIPMER already charge low fees, but private B.Sc and BPT fees can add up. Check the National Scholarship Portal for post-matric and merit schemes, your state's welfare department schemes, and the minority and disability scholarships you may qualify for. Students in allied health can also look at the AISEE scholarship for medical students, which rewards merit across healthcare courses. For a wider list, see scholarships after 12th in India.

Frequently asked questions

Which paramedical course is best after 12th?

No single course is best for everyone. BPT, Radiology & Imaging and B.Sc Nursing have the widest job markets. Optometry and Respiratory Therapy face less competition, and MLT offers the most openings at entry level. Choose based on your interest and the clinical setting you would enjoy.

Is NEET required for paramedical courses?

Not for most of them. AIIMS, PGIMER and CMC use their own tests. NEET UG is required at JIPMER and for B.Sc Nursing in several states, and NCAHP has said it will be compulsory for BPT and BOT from 2027-28.

Can I do a paramedical course without Biology?

A few, yes. Optometry and Radiology & Imaging at AIIMS accept PCM, and some Health Information Management programmes accept other streams. Most allied degrees, BPT and nursing require Biology.

What is the salary after a paramedical course in India?

Freshers in private hospitals usually earn about ₹2.5–5 lakh a year. Specialised imaging technologists and experienced physiotherapists can reach ₹8–12 lakh, and central government nursing officers start at Pay Level 7 (₹44,900 basic plus allowances).

What is the NCAHP and why does it matter to students?

NCAHP is the national regulator under the NCAHP Act, 2021 for 56 allied and healthcare professions. It sets curricula and admission norms and will run professional registration through state councils, so studying at a compliant institute protects your future eligibility for jobs.

Are paramedical diplomas after 10th worth it?

They can get you an entry-level job quickly, but pay and promotion prospects are limited. If you can, finish Class 12 with PCB and take a recognised degree, or treat the diploma as a stepping stone to one.

Conclusion: picking your paramedical course in 2026

Paramedical courses in India now sit under a stronger national framework, with new curricula, tighter recognition rules and steady demand from hospitals. Shortlist two or three courses that suit you, register for the AIIMS, PGIMER or CMC tests and for NEET UG, and check every college's recognition before you pay. To build exam confidence, try the free test series and plan your funding early.
