List of Top Universities in Tamil Nadu 2026: NIRF Ranks & Fees

Looking for a reliable list of top universities in Tamil Nadu for 2026? Tamil Nadu has more NIRF-ranked institutions than almost any other state. Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur all have institutions that rank among the best in India for engineering, medicine, science and the arts.

This guide lists 15 of the state's leading universities and institutes, ordered by their official NIRF rank. For each one you will find the type of institution, its NIRF rank, popular courses, the entrance exam you need and an approximate fee range. That should help you build a sensible shortlist.

Quick answer: In the NIRF 2025 India Rankings, IIT Madras is ranked No. 1 in India (Overall). It is followed in Tamil Nadu by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Overall 17, University 8), VIT Vellore (Overall 21), SRM IST (Overall 22) and Saveetha (SIMATS) (Overall 23). Anna University (Overall 29) is the top-ranked state government university, and NIT Trichy is No. 9 in Engineering.

Note on rankings: All ranks in this article come from the NIRF 2025 India Rankings (released September 2025), the latest edition whose full lists we could verify. If the Ministry of Education has published a newer edition, check the updated ranks on nirfindia.org.

The route into each institution depends on its type. Central institutes use national exams, Anna University and its colleges use state counselling, and private deemed universities usually run their own tests.

  1. Pick your stream and target list. Decide between engineering, medicine, science, commerce or arts, then choose 8–10 institutions from the table above.
  2. Write the right entrance exams. JEE Main (NITs and some private universities), JEE Advanced (IIT Madras), NEET UG (all MBBS/BDS seats), CUET UG (Central University of Tamil Nadu), and university tests such as VITEEE, SRMJEEE and AEEE.
  3. Register for TNEA if you are from Tamil Nadu. TNEA fills Anna University and most engineering seats in the state using your Class 12 marks. Government-school students get a 7.5% special reservation.
  4. Take part in counselling. JoSAA (IITs/NITs), MCC and the Tamil Nadu medical selection committee (NEET seats), TNEA (engineering) or the university's own counselling.
  5. Submit documents and pay fees on time. Keep your mark sheets, community certificate, nativity certificate and income certificate ready.

How to choose the right university in Tamil Nadu

The NIRF rank is a good starting point, but it shouldn't be the only thing you weigh. A university that suits your course, budget and career goals will often serve you better than a higher-ranked one that doesn't.

  • Check the subject ranking, not just the overall rank. NIRF also publishes separate lists for Engineering, Medical, Law, Pharmacy and Management.
  • Compare total cost. Add tuition, hostel, mess and exam fees for all four or five years.
  • Look at placement reports. Median salary tells you more than the highest package.
  • Confirm approvals. Check UGC recognition (for deemed universities, see ugc.gov.in), AICTE approval for engineering and NMC approval for medicine.
  • Consider location. Chennai and Coimbatore have more internships, while Thanjavur, Krishnankoil or Karaikudi usually mean lower living costs.

Tip: Make a three-tier list: two "dream" institutes (e.g. IIT Madras, NIT Trichy), four "target" universities that match your expected scores, and two "safe" options. This way, one bad exam day won't leave you without a seat.

Scholarships and financial help for students in Tamil Nadu

Studying at a top university doesn't have to strain your family's finances. Tamil Nadu students can combine national, state and private scholarships.

  • National Scholarship Portal (NSP): Central schemes such as post-matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/minority students and the Central Sector Scheme for college students. Apply on scholarships.gov.in.
  • Tamil Nadu state schemes: Pudhumai Penn (₹1,000 per month for girls from government schools in higher education), Tamil Pudhalvan (the same support for boys), first-graduate tuition concessions through TNEA, and state post-matric scholarships.
  • Institute fee waivers: IITs and NITs offer full or partial tuition waivers based on family income, and many deemed universities give merit scholarships to top entrance-exam rankers.
  • Merit scholarship exams: The AISEE scholarship (All India Scholarship Entrance Examination) helps Class 12 and college students reduce their fees for engineering, medical and other courses at participating institutions.

For a wider list of options, see our guide to scholarships after 12th in India. You can also browse the participating colleges and universities.
