PSG College of Technology
PSG Tech is the city's best-known engineering college and the flagship of the PSG group. It is a government-aided college, so the fee for government-quota seats is far lower than at most private colleges, which makes its TNEA cut-offs among the highest in the state.
- Established: 1951
- Type: Government-aided, autonomous (affiliated to Anna University)
- NIRF 2025: Engineering rank 67; Management rank 84; Overall band 101–150
- Popular courses: B.E. CSE, ECE, Mechanical, Production, B.Tech IT, sandwich (industry-linked) programmes, MBA
- Admission via: TNEA counselling for B.E./B.Tech; TANCET for MBA/MCA
- Approx. fees: Aided seats are low-cost; self-supporting seats cost more. Check psgtech.edu for the current fee table.
Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT)
CIT is another government-aided autonomous college with a large, green campus near the airport. It is popular for core engineering branches and its five-year integrated M.Sc. programmes in software systems, data science and decision science.
- Established: 1956
- Type: Government-aided, autonomous
- NIRF 2025: Engineering band 101–150
- Admission via: TNEA
Government College of Technology (GCT)
GCT, set up in 1945, is the city's fully government engineering college. Its fees are among the lowest for B.E. in Tamil Nadu, and it draws high-scoring TNEA applicants, even though it does not appear in the NIRF 2025 Engineering top 100.
Kumaraguru, SKCET, Sri Ramakrishna and KPR
These private autonomous colleges are well regarded for placements in IT and core sectors. Kumaraguru College of Technology (1984) is known for its innovation and entrepreneurship focus. SKCET (1998) made the NIRF 2025 Engineering top 100 at rank 100. Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College (1994) belongs to the SNR Sons Charitable Trust group, which also runs arts, nursing, dental and pharmacy colleges. KPRIET (2009) is a newer college that has climbed quickly. Fees at these colleges for TNEA seats follow the state fee committee's rates; management-quota fees are higher.
Note on bands: NIRF publishes exact ranks only for the top 100. Bands such as 101–150 come from the NIRF tables as reproduced by Careers360. Where we could confirm a band in only one source, we say "reported".
Medical and dental colleges in Coimbatore
Every MBBS and BDS seat is filled through NEET-UG. In Tamil Nadu, 15% of seats in government colleges go to the all-India quota (MCC counselling) and the rest go through the state Selection Committee counselling.
| Name | Type | NIRF 2025 rank (Medical) | Main courses | Admission route | Locality | Official website |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coimbatore Medical College | Government | Not ranked | MBBS, MD/MS | NEET-UG (state / AIQ) | Avinashi Road | cmccbe.ac.in |

| KMCH Institute of Health Sciences & Research | Private | Not ranked | MBBS, allied health | NEET-UG | Coimbatore city | kmchihsr.edu.in |
Coimbatore Medical College
Founded in 1966, Coimbatore Medical College is attached to the large government hospital on Trichy Road and handles a very high patient load, which is valuable for clinical training. Government MBBS fees in Tamil Nadu are very low, so state-quota NEET cut-offs here are high.
PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (PSG IMSR)
PSG IMSR opened in 1985 next to PSG Hospitals in Peelamedu. It is the city's only medical college in the NIRF 2025 Medical list (rank 43). Fees depend on whether you get a government-quota or management-quota seat, so check the Selection Committee prospectus for the year.
Amrita's NIRF Medical rank 9 belongs to its Kochi medical school, not a Coimbatore campus, so do not count it as a Coimbatore medical option. For help paying for a medical seat, see our guide to scholarships for medical students.

PSGR Krishnammal College for Women and PSG College of Arts & Science
Both belong to the wider PSG family. PSGR Krishnammal College (1963) is a women's college ranked 9th in India in NIRF 2025. PSG College of Arts & Science (1947) is co-educational and moved up from 11th in 2024 to 10th in 2025. Both are known for commerce, computer science and life-science programmes, and seats in popular courses fill quickly on Class 12 marks.
Another name worth knowing is Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts & Science in Periyanaickenpalayam, just north of the city, listed around 94 in the 2025 College list (approx.).
Law and other colleges
For law, Government Law College, Coimbatore offers five-year and three-year LL.B. courses through the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University counselling. No Coimbatore law college appears in the NIRF Law list. For pharmacy, PSG College of Pharmacy (psgpharma.ac.in) is the best-known option in the city.
How admission works in Coimbatore
- Engineering (B.E./B.Tech): Apply for TNEA, the state's single-window counselling, which ranks students by Class 12 maths, physics and chemistry marks. Deemed universities such as Amrita and Karunya run their own entrance tests and also accept JEE Main.
- Medicine and dentistry (MBBS/BDS): Qualify NEET-UG, then register for MCC (all-India quota) and Tamil Nadu Selection Committee counselling.
- Agriculture: Apply on the TNAU admissions portal after Class 12; ranks are based on board marks. ICAR AIEEA covers the all-India quota.
- Arts, science and commerce: Apply directly to each college after Class 12 results, usually between May and June. Admission is on merit.
- MBA/MCA: Take TANCET or CAT/MAT, then follow each institute's group discussion and interview process.
- Law: Apply through the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University counselling after Class 12 (five-year) or graduation (three-year).
How to choose the right college in Coimbatore
Ranking tells you a lot, but not everything. A government-aided seat at a top-100 college can cost a fraction of a private deemed university fee, and that difference matters over four or five years.
- Check the category rank: Compare engineering colleges by NIRF Engineering rank and arts colleges by College rank, not by mixed lists.
- Look at the seat type: At PSG Tech, CIT and GCT, government-quota fees are far lower than management or self-supporting seats.
- Verify placements: Ask for the latest placement report with median salary, not just the highest package.
- Think about travel: Amrita (Ettimadai), Karunya and KPRIET are well outside the city centre, so plan for hostel or college bus costs.
- Confirm approvals: Check AICTE approval for engineering and NMC recognition for medical seats on the official portals.
Tip: Make a shortlist of 8–10 colleges across three levels: ambitious (for example PSG Tech or CIT), realistic, and safe. Use last year's TNEA or NEET cut-offs to place each college on the list.
Verify fees before you pay: All fee figures in this guide are approximate and change every year. Always confirm the current fee structure on the institute's official website or in the counselling prospectus.
Scholarships for students in Coimbatore
Coimbatore students can combine several kinds of funding. The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) hosts central schemes such as the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships and post-matric schemes for SC, ST, OBC and minority students. Tamil Nadu also runs its own support, including the Pudhumai Penn scheme for girls from government schools, the first-graduate tuition fee waiver in TNEA, and the 7.5% reservation for government-school students in professional courses.
Merit scholarships are another route. The AISEE scholarship is a national exam that helps Class 12 and college students lower their tuition at partner institutions. Engineering aspirants can also browse our list of scholarships for engineering students. Many Coimbatore colleges also offer their own merit and need-based fee waivers, so ask the admissions office.
