Engineering is the most popular stream in Raipur. NIT Raipur is the city's flagship. It started in 1956 as the Government College of Engineering and Technology and later became an NIT. IIIT Naya Raipur (Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee International Institute of Information Technology), set up in 2015, focuses on computer science and electronics. Government Engineering College (GEC) Raipur is a state college affiliated to Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University (CSVTU), Bhilai.

NIT Raipur was ranked 86 in Engineering and 35 in Architecture in NIRF 2025 (it was 71 in Engineering in 2024). It offers a wide range of B.Tech branches, including mining, metallurgy and biomedical engineering, alongside the usual CSE, ECE and mechanical. It is also one of the few places in the state for a B.Arch from a central institute.

IIIT Naya Raipur runs a smaller campus focused on IT. Its batches are small, and seats are filled through JoSAA using JEE Main scores. GEC Raipur is a lower-cost government option for students who are counselled through the state's engineering admissions.

Medical colleges in Raipur

Raipur has two major government medical colleges. AIIMS Raipur was set up in 2012 as one of the first six new AIIMS and is an Institute of National Importance. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Medical College (Pt. JNM Medical College) is the state's oldest government medical college. Its teaching hospital is Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Hospital.

AIIMS Raipur was ranked 31 in the NIRF 2025 Medical category. MBBS seats here are among the most competitive in central India, and fees are nominal compared with private colleges. At Pt. JNM Medical College, most seats are filled through the state quota. That makes it a realistic target for Chhattisgarh-domicile students with good NEET scores.

Management, law and agriculture institutes

Three of Raipur's best-ranked institutes are outside engineering and medicine. Two of them, IIM Raipur (2010) and HNLU (2003), are in Naya Raipur. IIM Raipur publicised its NIRF 2025 Management rank of 15 in a press release, and HNLU is a national law university that admits students through CLAT.

HNLU has appeared in earlier NIRF Law rankings, but it is not in the NIRF 2025 Law top 40. IGKV, founded in 1987, was the only institution from Chhattisgarh in the NIRF 2025 Agriculture list. If you are drawn to farming, food technology or agri-business, it is worth a close look.
