List of All NIT Colleges in India 2026: 31 NITs with NIRF Ranks
All 31 NITs in India in one table with state, year founded and NIRF 2025 Engineering rank, plus JoSAA admission, home-state quota, fees, fee waivers and CSE cut-offs.

Looking for a list of all NIT colleges in India? There are 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in 2026, spread across almost every state and a few Union Territories. This guide puts all 31 in one table with the state, year of establishment and NIRF 2025 Engineering rank, then explains admission, fees, fee waivers, cut-offs and placements.
NITs are the second-largest group of centrally funded engineering institutes after the IITs. They admit B.Tech students through JEE Main and JoSAA, at fees far lower than most private colleges.
Quick answer: India has 31 NITs, all Institutes of National Importance under the NIT Act, 2007. In NIRF 2025 (Engineering), the top five NITs are NIT Trichy (9), NIT Rourkela (13), NIT Surathkal (17), NIT Calicut (21) and NIT Warangal (28). Admission to B.Tech is through JEE Main followed by JoSAA and CSAB counselling.
What is an NIT?
A National Institute of Technology is a centrally funded technical institute governed by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (later amended and now called the NIT, Science Education and Research Act). The Act declared every NIT an Institute of National Importance, which lets each one award its own degrees and run on a common governance model overseen by the NIT Council and the Ministry of Education.
Most of the older NITs started life as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) between 1959 and the late 1980s, jointly run by the Centre and the states. They were upgraded to NITs in the early 2000s. Ten newer NITs were then set up around 2009–2010, mostly in states that did not have one, and NIT Andhra Pradesh followed in 2015.
Note: IIEST Shibpur and the IIITs also admit students through JoSAA, but they are not NITs. Only the 31 institutes in the table below carry the NIT name.

How admission to NITs works
Every NIT fills its B.Tech and B.Arch seats through one national system. There is no separate entrance test for any NIT.
- Take JEE Main (conducted by NTA, usually in January and April). Your All India Rank (AIR) from the B.E./B.Tech paper is what matters for NIT seats.
- Meet the Class 12 criterion: at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST), or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
- Register for JoSAA counselling (June–July). JoSAA runs joint seat allocation for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs). You fill a ranked list of institute-branch choices.
- Accept your seat in a JoSAA round, pay the seat acceptance fee and choose freeze, float or slide.
- Use CSAB special rounds if you miss out. The Central Seat Allocation Board fills seats still vacant after JoSAA in the NIT+ system.
Home State vs Other State quota
In most NITs, 50% of B.Tech seats are reserved for Home State (HS) candidates, meaning students who passed Class 12 from the state or UT where the NIT is located. The other 50% go to Other State (OS) candidates from the rest of India. Some NITs serving several UTs or North-Eastern states follow modified rules, so read the JoSAA business rules for your target institute.
This split matters a lot. A rank that is too low for a CSE seat at a famous NIT under OS quota can still win a good branch at your own state's NIT under HS quota. Within both quotas, the usual central reservations apply (OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, PwD), plus supernumerary seats for female candidates.
Approximate JoSAA 2025 closing ranks for CSE
Cut-offs change every year. As a rough guide, the reported JoSAA 2025 final-round CSE closing ranks (Open category, gender-neutral) at the most sought-after NITs were approximately:
| NIT | Other State (approx.) | Home State (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| NIT Trichy | ~1,450 | ~4,500 |
| NIT Surathkal | ~1,800 | ~2,800 |
| NIT Warangal | ~2,400 | ~3,500 |
Generally, CSE at the next group of NITs closes at higher ranks, and branches at newer NITs can remain open well into five-figure ranks. Always check the official opening and closing ranks on josaa.nic.in, and remember that reserved-category and female-pool cut-offs are different.
Verify before you rely on it: Closing ranks shift with seat matrix, exam difficulty and student preferences. Treat these as indicators, not guarantees.

NIT fees and fee waivers
NIT tuition is set centrally. For the 2025 intake, many NITs charged a B.Tech tuition fee of about ₹62,500 per semester (roughly ₹1.25 lakh a year) for General, OBC-NCL and EWS students whose family income is above ₹5 lakh. Hostel, mess, admission and other charges are extra and vary by institute, so the full yearly cost is often approx. ₹1.5–2.5 lakh.
The tuition fee waiver rules come from a Ministry of Education (then MHRD) order of 2016, which NITs continued to apply in their 2025 and 2026 notices:
| Student group | Tuition fee waiver |
|---|---|
| SC, ST and PwD students | Full waiver |
| Family income below ₹1 lakh a year | Full waiver |
| Family income ₹1 lakh – ₹5 lakh a year | Two-thirds waiver |
| All others | Full tuition fee |
Waivers cover only tuition, not hostel or mess. Institutes usually ask for a fresh income certificate every year, and some require separate certificates for both parents.
Check the official fee notice: Each NIT publishes its own fee structure every year. Confirm the latest figures on your institute's website before paying.
Placements at NITs
Placements are one of the main reasons students choose an NIT. The older, higher-ranked NITs such as Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Rourkela and Calicut attract large tech, finance and core-engineering recruiters, and CSE, IT and ECE students generally see the strongest outcomes.
Results vary a lot by branch and by NIT. Newer NITs in the North-East and hill states have smaller recruiter pools, though many students there still secure jobs or move on to GATE, M.Tech and higher studies. For reliable numbers, look at the median salary and placement data each NIT submits to NIRF, which is published on the institute's website, rather than the "highest package" headlines.
How to choose the right NIT
Tip: Branch often matters more than the NIT name. A sought-after branch at a mid-ranked NIT can sometimes offer better outcomes than a less popular branch at a top NIT, depending on your career goals.
- Use your Home State advantage. Compare your rank against HS closing ranks for your state's NIT before assuming you need an OS seat.
- Look at NIRF scores and trends, not just the rank in a single year.
- Check placement medians for your intended branch, not the institute-wide headline.
- Factor in location and climate, especially for NITs in remote or hill areas.
Scholarships and funding for NIT students
Low NIT fees, combined with the fee waivers above, already make an NIT degree affordable for many families. You can reduce costs further with scholarships:
- National Scholarship Portal (NSP) schemes, including post-matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC and minority students and the Central Sector Scheme for college students.
- State government scholarships run by your home state's welfare or education department.
- Institute and alumni scholarships announced by individual NITs.
- Merit-based private scholarships such as the AISEE scholarship for engineering students, which helps Class 12 and college students fund their studies.
