Top Colleges in the North East States 2026: All 8 States Listed
State-by-state guide to the top colleges in Arunachal, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, with NIRF 2025 ranks, admission routes and NE-only benefits.

Looking for the top colleges in the North East states for 2026? This guide covers all eight states — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura — with the best institutes in each, their latest NIRF ranking, main courses and how to get in.
The region is home to an IIT, an IIM, all eight NITs of the North East, several central universities and two well-known central medical institutes. Many of them also have seats or schemes meant for students from the North Eastern states, which we explain honestly further down.
Quick answer: The highest-ranked institutes in the North East (NIRF 2025) are IIT Guwahati (Engineering 8), Gauhati University (University 33), IIM Shillong (Management 38), NIT Silchar (Engineering 50), Tezpur University (University 79), Mizoram University (University 82) and NIT Meghalaya (Engineering 83). Outside Assam and Meghalaya, the NITs and central universities in each state are usually the strongest choices.

Benefits for students from the North Eastern states
Several institutes in the region keep part of their seats for local or North East students. These benefits are real, but each comes with domicile rules, so read the brochure carefully.
- Home State quota at NITs: under JoSAA, about half of B.Tech seats at each NIT go to candidates from that NIT's home state. For example, NIT Nagaland keeps 50% of its seats for Nagaland domicile candidates, which can mean a much lower closing rank for local students.
- CSAB-NEUT seats: CSAB runs a special round for candidates from the North Eastern states and some Union Territories. For 2026 about 1,063 supernumerary seats (B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Pharm) were offered at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, on top of JoSAA seats. You need a valid JEE Main rank.
- NERIST seat distribution: NERIST fills its engineering and forestry seats as per the reservation policy of each North Eastern state, along with the all-India quotas.
- Medical seats at RIMS and NEIGRIHMS: both central institutes keep most MBBS seats for candidates from the North Eastern states, divided state-wise, plus an all-India quota. Your state's medical education directorate runs the state-wise share.
- Ishan Uday scholarship: a UGC scheme only for students from the North Eastern Region joining general, technical or medical degree courses (see the scholarships section).
Check before you apply: quota percentages, seat numbers and domicile certificates change each year. Always read the latest JoSAA/CSAB brochure, the MCC seat matrix or the institute prospectus before you lock your choices.
How admission works at North East colleges
Most top institutes in the region use national entrance exams, so the process is the same as anywhere in India.
- Engineering: write JEE Main. NITs, IIITs and NERIST fill seats through JoSAA and then CSAB (including CSAB-NEUT). IIT Guwahati needs JEE Advanced. Some private universities, such as Sikkim Manipal, also run their own tests.
- Medical: write NEET UG. All-India quota seats go through MCC counselling; state and North East quota seats at RIMS, NEIGRIHMS and AGMC go through state counselling.
- Central universities (BA, B.Sc, B.Com): RGU, Manipur, NEHU, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Tezpur universities use CUET UG; PG courses use CUET PG.
- Management: IIM Shillong admits through CAT followed by its own interview process; university MBA programmes may accept CAT, MAT or CUET PG.
- Undergraduate colleges: colleges like St. Anthony's, St. Edmund's and Pachhunga University College mostly admit on Class 12 marks through their own application forms.
How to choose the right college in the North East
Start with the course, not the brand. A B.Tech seat at a central NIT and a B.Sc seat at a central university are very different paths.
- Use the right ranking: compare engineering colleges by the NIRF Engineering list and universities by the University list.
- Check your quota: if you belong to a North Eastern state, your home-state NIT or CSAB-NEUT seat may be far easier to get than an "other state" seat.
- Think about location: some campuses (Ravangla, Jote, Sohra) are in hilly areas with limited transport and heavy monsoons. Visit or speak to current students if you can.
- Compare total costs: central institutes are usually cheaper than private universities, but hostel and mess charges vary.
Tip: make a shortlist of two or three colleges per state you are willing to live in. North East counselling rounds move fast, and a clear list helps you fill choices without panic.
Scholarships for students in the North East
The Ishan Uday Special Scholarship Scheme by UGC is meant only for students from the North Eastern Region. As per the UGC guidelines, it pays about ₹5,400 a month for general degree courses and ₹7,800 a month for technical, professional and medical courses, for students whose family income is within the scheme limit. Applications for 2025-26 ran on the National Scholarship Portal; check scholarships.gov.in and ugc.gov.in for the 2026-27 cycle.
You can also apply for central schemes on NSP (post-matric, merit-cum-means) and your own state's scholarships. Talent-based options like the AISEE scholarship can help with fees at participating colleges. See our guides on scholarships for engineering students and scholarships for medical students for more options.

Yes, in two ways. Each NIT keeps about half its seats for its home state, and CSAB runs a special NEUT round with supernumerary seats for candidates from the North Eastern states and some Union Territories. Both need a valid JEE Main rank and a domicile certificate.
Which are the top medical colleges in the North East outside Assam?
RIMS Imphal and NEIGRIHMS Shillong are the leading central medical institutes, and Agartala Government Medical College is a large state college. Most of their MBBS seats are kept for North East candidates, and admission is through NEET UG.
Is the Ishan Uday scholarship still available in 2026?
We found no notice that the scheme has ended; the 2025-26 round ran on the National Scholarship Portal. Check NSP and the UGC website for the 2026-27 dates before applying.
Which central universities are in the North East?
Every North Eastern state has at least one: Rajiv Gandhi University, Assam University and Tezpur University, Manipur University, NEHU, Mizoram University, Nagaland University, Sikkim University and Tripura University. Central Agricultural University in Imphal also serves the whole region.
Conclusion: picking from the top colleges in the North East states
The top colleges in the North East states range from IIT Guwahati and IIM Shillong to NITs and central universities in every state capital. Shortlist by course and NIRF 2025 category first, then check your home-state or CSAB-NEUT eligibility, as it can make a big difference.
Your next step: note the JEE Main, NEET and CUET dates for 2026-27, keep your domicile certificate ready and apply for scholarships early.
