Each of the top universities in West Bengal admits students through a specific exam. Pick your target courses first, then work out which exams you need to register for.

  1. Engineering at IIT Kharagpur: qualify JEE Main, then clear JEE Advanced and take part in JoSAA counselling.
  2. Engineering at NIT Durgapur and IIEST Shibpur: admission is through JEE Main ranks and JoSAA counselling.
  3. Engineering at Jadavpur University and state colleges: appear for WBJEE, conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board.
  4. Medical (MBBS/BDS): NEET-UG, followed by MCC counselling (All India Quota) or West Bengal state counselling.

  6. Sciences at IISER Kolkata: the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT).
  7. Law at WBNUJS: CLAT. MBA at IIM Calcutta: CAT. Statistics at ISI: ISI Admission Test.

Check before you apply: Fees, seat matrices and exam dates change every year. The fee figures in this guide are approximate (2025–26) and are only for comparison. Always confirm on the institute's official website before paying anything.

How to choose the right university in West Bengal

A high NIRF rank is a good start, but the right university depends on your course, budget and career plans.

  • Match rank to course: use the NIRF category for your subject. For architecture, IIEST Shibpur (#4) beats many institutes with higher Overall ranks.
  • Compare total cost: Jadavpur University and the University of Calcutta cost a fraction of what private universities charge. Add hostel and living costs to tuition when you compare.
  • Look at placements by branch: median salaries vary a lot between branches. Read each institute's official placement report rather than headline figures.
  • Consider location: Kolkata offers internships and city life, while Kharagpur, Santiniketan and Mohanpur offer large, quieter residential campuses.
  • Check recognition: confirm the university's status on the UGC website before you take admission, especially for private universities.

Tip: Keep one "dream", two "target" and two "safe" options across different exams (for example JEE Main, WBJEE and CUET). That way one tough exam day does not cost you a whole year.

Scholarships and financial help

Many of the best colleges in West Bengal are public and charge low fees, but hostel, books and travel still add up. Several schemes can help you cover these costs:

  • Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (SVMCM): the West Bengal government's main scholarship for meritorious students from lower-income families, covering school, UG and PG levels.
  • National Scholarship Portal (NSP): central schemes such as the Central Sector Scholarship and post-matric scholarships for SC, ST, OBC and minority students. Apply at scholarships.gov.in.
  • Institute fee waivers: IITs, NITs and IISERs offer full or partial tuition waivers based on category and family income.
  • AISEE scholarship: the All India Scholarship Entrance Examination gives merit-based support to Class 12 and college students in engineering, medical and other streams. See the AISEE scholarship for engineering students for details.
