Top Engineering Colleges in Bihar 2026: NIRF Ranks, Fees & Admission
IIT Patna, NIT Patna, IIIT Bhagalpur and Bihar's BEU colleges compared: NIRF 2025 ranks, approximate fees, JoSAA and UGEAC admission, and the interest-free Student Credit Card.

Looking for the top engineering colleges in Bihar for 2026? The state now has a premier IIT, a 140-year-old NIT, a newer IIIT and a government engineering college in every district, so the choice is wider than many families expect. This guide ranks the strongest options using the latest verified NIRF data, and explains fees, admission through JoSAA and Bihar UGEAC, and how to pay for your degree.
Bihar has historically sent many of its brightest students to Kota, Delhi and the South for engineering. That pattern is changing. IIT Patna has climbed sharply in national rankings, NIT Patna remains a dependable choice, and the state's own colleges under Bihar Engineering University offer a B.Tech at a fraction of private-college costs.
Quick answer: The best engineering colleges in Bihar are IIT Patna (NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 19) and NIT Patna (NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 53), followed by IIIT Bhagalpur and BIT Mesra's Patna campus. Among state government colleges, Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology and Bhagalpur College of Engineering are the most established. Admission is through JEE Main/Advanced with JoSAA, or JEE Main with Bihar UGEAC counselling.

How admission works for engineering colleges in Bihar

There are two main routes. The national institutes use JoSAA, while the state colleges use Bihar's own counselling, now called UGEAC (Under Graduate Engineering Admission Counselling), run by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB). UGEAC has replaced the old BCECE engineering entrance test: there is no separate state exam, and seats are allotted on the basis of your JEE Main rank.
- Appear in JEE Main (January/April). This single exam opens the door to NIT Patna, IIIT Bhagalpur, BIT Patna and all Bihar government engineering colleges.
- Qualify for JEE Advanced if you aim for IIT Patna. Only the top JEE Main candidates can sit for JEE Advanced.
- Register for JoSAA counselling (June–July). Fill choices for IITs, NITs and IIITs. Bihar-domicile students benefit from the NIT Patna Home State quota.
- Apply for Bihar UGEAC on bceceboard.bihar.gov.in. For 2026, registration ran from 13 May to 5 June 2026, and only candidates with a valid JEE Main 2026 (Paper 1) score were eligible.
- Check the UGEAC rank card and fill choices. BCECEB prepares a state rank list from JEE Main scores, then runs choice filling and seat allotment (usually two rounds plus mop-up rounds).
- Report with documents. Complete document verification, pay the admission fee and report to the allotted college within the deadline.
Note: BCECEB's "BCECE" exam still exists for some other courses, but for B.Tech in Bihar's government colleges, JEE Main plus UGEAC is the route. Read the official UGEAC information bulletin each year, as dates and seat matrices change.
How to choose the right engineering college in Bihar
A rank list is a starting point, not the final answer. Match the college to your JEE rank, branch interest and budget.
Tip: If your JEE Main rank gets you a core branch at NIT Patna or IIIT Bhagalpur but CSE at a BEU college, think about your long-term goal. Coding jobs reward skills more than the branch name; PSU and GATE paths reward a strong core foundation.
- Compare placements, not promises. Ask for the latest placement report with median salary and the number of students placed, not just the highest package.
- Look at faculty and labs. Newer state colleges are still filling faculty posts; visit or speak to current students.
- Factor in total cost. A BEU college plus hostel can cost under ₹1 lakh a year, while private colleges may cost ₹2.5–3 lakh or more.
- Consider location. Colleges near Patna (NIT, IIT Bihta, Bakhtiyarpur, Nalanda) give easier access to internships, coaching and events.
- Check approvals. Every B.Tech college must be AICTE-approved, and state colleges must be affiliated with BEU.

Scholarships and funding for engineering students in Bihar
Engineering in Bihar can be very affordable, and several schemes reduce the burden further.
- Bihar Student Credit Card (BSCC): Education loans of up to ₹4 lakh for students who passed Class 12 in Bihar. In September 2025 the state made these loans interest-free for all applicants and extended repayment to 84 instalments (loans up to ₹2 lakh) or 120 instalments (above ₹2 lakh). In August 2026 the scheme was extended for another five years. Apply through the 7 Nischay portal and your District Registration and Counselling Centre (DRCC).
- Central fee waivers: IITs, NITs and IIITs waive tuition fully for SC/ST/PwD students and wholly or partly for families with low annual income.
- National Scholarship Portal (NSP): Post-matric and minority scholarships and the AICTE Pragati (for girls) and Saksham (for specially-abled students) schemes.
- Bihar post-matric scholarship: For SC, ST, BC and EBC students through the state PMS portal.
- Merit scholarships: You can also earn a fee concession through the AISEE scholarship for engineering students, which is open to Class 12 and college students across India.
