B.Com

The core commerce degree for accounting, finance, banking, tax and CA/CS/CMA

B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce) is an undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, taxation, business law and economics. It is the most common degree for students heading into accounting, banking and finance jobs, and many students pair it with CA, CS or CMA.

What is B.Com?

B.Com teaches the language of business: how money is recorded, reported, taxed, audited and managed. You learn accounting from the basics to company accounts, along with economics, business law, banking and statistics.

B.Com (Hons) usually goes deeper into corporate accounting, financial management and electives such as investment analysis or international finance. Under NEP 2020, many universities now offer a four-year version with research or honours in the final year.

How it differs from close alternatives: BBA/BMS are broader management degrees with less accounting depth. CA, CS and CMA are professional qualifications run by statutory institutes; many students study them alongside B.Com because the syllabi overlap.

Salary

Plain B.Com freshers typically start at ₹2.5–5 LPA (approx.); graduates of top colleges such as SRCC can get significantly higher offers in consulting and finance.

Pay grows mainly through added qualifications: CA, CMA, CS, CFA or an MBA can lift salaries to ₹7–15 LPA (approx.) or more within a few years. Experience in tax, audit or financial analysis also helps. Figures vary; check current placement reports.

Scope & higher studies

Every business needs accounting, tax and finance staff, so B.Com remains one of India's steadiest degrees. GST, digital payments and growing stock-market participation have increased demand for people who understand compliance and finance.

Routine bookkeeping is being automated, so in 2026 the best opportunities go to B.Com graduates who add analysis skills, accounting software, Excel and a professional qualification.

After this course

  • MBA / PGDM via CAT, XAT, CMAT or MAT
  • CA, CS or CMA (direct entry routes for graduates)

B.Com FAQs

What is the difference between B.Com and B.Com (Hons)?

B.Com (Hons) usually has deeper coverage of core subjects and more electives, and top colleges admit to it with higher cut-offs. Both are valid for jobs, M.Com and MBA.

Can I do CA with B.Com?

Yes, and many students do. Overlapping subjects help, but the CA exams are demanding, so plan your time carefully between college and ICAI exams.

Can a Science student do B.Com?

Many universities admit Science students to B.Com, though some top colleges require Accountancy or Mathematics. Check each college's eligibility before applying.

Is CUET needed for B.Com?

CUET-UG is needed for central universities like Delhi University and many others that use it. Many state universities still admit on Class 12 marks.

Which is better after 12th: B.Com or BBA?

Choose B.Com if you like accounting, tax and finance, or plan CA/CS/CMA. Choose BBA if you prefer general management, marketing or HR.

What is the salary after B.Com?

Freshers usually earn about ₹2.5–5 LPA (approx.). Salaries rise with experience and with qualifications like CA, CMA or an MBA.
