What is BPT?
Physiotherapists help people move better and live with less pain. In BPT you learn the body's structure and function, then how to examine a patient, find the cause of a movement problem and plan treatment using exercise, joint mobilisation, electrotherapy, posture training and patient education.
Early years cover anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, biomechanics and exercise therapy. Later years add orthopaedics, neurology, cardio-respiratory care, sports and community physiotherapy, with clinical postings in hospitals. The course ends with a compulsory six-month rotating internship.
Regulation and admission: physiotherapy is covered by the NCAHP, which has issued a national curriculum and registration rules for allied and healthcare professionals. NCAHP has deferred NEET-UG for BPT admissions to 2027-28; for 2026-27, institutes admit on Class 12 PCB marks, state CETs or their own tests. BPT differs from MBBS in that physiotherapists do not prescribe medicines or operate; it differs from BOT (occupational therapy), which focuses on daily-living skills.

Salary
Fresh BPT graduates usually earn ₹2.5–5 LPA (approx.) in hospitals and clinics. Government posts follow state or central pay scales and are often better paid but limited in number.
Income grows fastest with an MPT specialisation, sports or neuro experience, or a successful private practice; experienced physiotherapists can earn ₹6–15 LPA or more (approx.). City, patient load and reputation matter a lot. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Demand for physiotherapists in India is growing with an ageing population, more lifestyle and sports injuries, post-surgery rehabilitation and better awareness of non-drug treatment. The NCAHP Act is also giving the profession a national register and uniform standards, which should improve recognition.
The field is competitive at entry level, so students who add an MPT, a clinical speciality or business skills for private practice tend to do best in 2026 and beyond.
After this course
- MPT (Master of Physiotherapy) in orthopaedics, neurology, sports or cardio-respiratory
- Certificate courses in manual therapy, dry needling or sports rehab
- M.Sc. in sports science or exercise physiology
- MBA in Hospital / Healthcare Management
- Licensing exams and master's abroad (e.g. Canada, Australia, UK)
- PhD in physiotherapy or rehabilitation
BPT FAQs
Is NEET required for BPT in 2026?
No. NCAHP has deferred NEET-UG for BPT and BOT admissions to 2027-28. For 2026-27, admission is through Class 12 PCB marks, state CETs or university tests depending on the institute.
How long is the BPT course?
Under the NCAHP curriculum, BPT runs for four years of study followed by a six-month compulsory internship, so 4.5 years in total.
Can a physiotherapist use 'Dr.' before their name?
This has been debated and official guidance has changed in recent years. Check the latest NCAHP and Ministry of Health position before using the title.
Is BPT a good option if I do not get MBBS?
It can be, if you like hands-on patient care and movement science. It is a separate profession with its own career path, not a backup MBBS.
Who regulates physiotherapy in India?
Physiotherapy comes under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) and the state allied health councils set up under the NCAHP Act, 2021.
Can BPT graduates work abroad?
Yes, but most countries require a credential assessment and licensing exam. Requirements differ between Canada, Australia, the UK, the US and the Gulf countries.
