What is B.Sc MLT / BMLS?
Most clinical decisions depend on a lab report at some point. Medical laboratory professionals collect and process samples, run tests on analysers and microscopes, check quality and report results that doctors use for diagnosis and treatment.
In B.Sc MLT you study anatomy, physiology and biochemistry first, then the main lab departments: haematology and blood banking, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, histopathology and cytology, and molecular diagnostics. Lab safety, quality control and NABL-style accreditation practices are part of the training, and the final phase is a hospital lab internship.
Regulation and how it differs: the profession is covered by the NCAHP, which has notified a national curriculum and a registration framework for allied health professionals. A DMLT is a 2-year diploma with a narrower scope; a B.Sc in Biotechnology or Microbiology is research-oriented rather than focused on hospital diagnostics.

Eligibility & admission
- Pass in Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (English usually required).
- Commonly 50% in PCB for General and 40% for SC/ST/OBC, as in the NCAHP framework; individual institutes may differ.
- Minimum age is usually 17 years at admission.
- Some reports say NEET-UG will be required for several allied health courses from 2027-28; check NCAHP and your state for the final rule for MLT.
- DMLT holders may get lateral entry at some universities.
How admission works
- Pass Class 12 with PCB and the required marks
- Check the admission route of each institute: entrance test, CUET-UG, state paramedical counselling or merit
- Apply online and appear in the entrance test where required
- Attend counselling or the merit list and choose your course and college
- Verify documents, complete a medical check and pay fees

Salary
Freshers usually earn ₹2–4 LPA (approx.) in private labs and hospitals. Government lab technologist posts follow state or central pay scales and are usually better paid with job security, but are filled through recruitment exams.
Pay improves with experience, an M.Sc MLT, skills in molecular diagnostics or quality systems, and supervisory roles; senior technologists and lab managers can earn ₹5–10 LPA (approx.). Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's diagnostics market has grown fast, with large lab chains, hospital labs and home sample collection reaching smaller towns. Public health programmes, disease surveillance and molecular testing, which expanded after COVID-19, keep demand for trained lab professionals steady.
The NCAHP's national register and uniform curriculum should improve standards and recognition for qualified B.Sc MLT graduates compared with untrained staff, which is a positive sign for 2026 and beyond.
After this course
- M.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology / Medical Lab Sciences
- M.Sc Medical Microbiology or Clinical Biochemistry
- PG diploma in clinical research or quality management
- MBA in Hospital / Healthcare Management
- Certification and licensing for labs abroad (e.g. ASCP for the US, Gulf health authority exams)
- PhD in lab sciences
B.Sc MLT / BMLS FAQs
Is B.Sc MLT three years or four years?
Traditionally it is three years plus an internship. Under the NCAHP curriculum many universities now run it as a 4-year programme often called BMLS (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences).
Is NEET required for B.Sc MLT?
For 2026-27, most institutes admit through their own tests, CUET-UG or merit. NCAHP plans NEET-UG for several allied courses from 2027-28, so check the official notice for your year.
What is the difference between DMLT and B.Sc MLT?
DMLT is a 2-year diploma for technician-level work. B.Sc MLT is a degree with deeper science and better options for supervisory roles, government posts and higher studies.
Can I open my own pathology lab after B.Sc MLT?
You can work in and manage labs, but test reports generally have to be signed by a qualified pathologist or doctor as per rules. Check your state's clinical establishment rules.
Who regulates medical lab professionals in India?
They come under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) and the state allied health councils, which are setting up registration for practitioners.
