What is B.Sc?
B.Sc is an umbrella name: you pick a main subject (B.Sc Hons Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology, Botany, Statistics, Electronics, Geology and more) or a combination of two or three subjects (often called B.Sc Programme or B.Sc General, e.g. Physics–Chemistry–Maths or Chemistry–Botany–Zoology). Lab work, problem-solving and scientific thinking run through all of them.
Main subject choices: PCM students usually choose Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Electronics, Computer Science or Geology; PCB students choose Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Life Sciences. Applied options such as Forensic Science, Food Technology, Home Science, Nursing and Agriculture are separate B.Sc programmes with their own rules.
3-year or 4-year? Under NEP 2020 and the UGC Four-Year Undergraduate Programme framework, many universities now let you leave with a 3-year degree, stay for a 4th year to earn an Honours degree, or (if you hold a high CGPA, typically 7.5 or more) take Honours with Research, which includes a dissertation. Exit points after Year 1 (certificate) and Year 2 (diploma) also exist. A 4-year degree lets you join a 1-year master's at some universities and can strengthen applications for research or study abroad.
How to choose: pick the subject you scored well in and enjoy reading beyond the syllabus. Single-subject Honours is better if you plan an M.Sc/PhD in that subject; a multi-subject Programme keeps options open (and suits teaching via B.Ed). If you want research at a top institute, also consider the 5-year BS-MS at IISERs or NISER.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (10+2) pass in the Science stream from a recognised board.
- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for Physics/Maths/Statistics/Electronics; Physics, Chemistry and Biology for Zoology/Botany/life-science subjects. Chemistry usually accepts either.
- Minimum marks commonly 50–60% aggregate for general category, about 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC (varies by university).
- Central universities admit through CUET-UG with the subject combination they specify; most state colleges use Class 12 merit.
- No upper age limit at most universities.
How admission works
- Decide your main subject or combination and check its Class 12 subject requirement.
- For central universities (DU, BHU, JNU, Hyderabad etc.), register for CUET-UG with the required domain subjects; for IISER/NISER BS-MS, apply for the IISER Aptitude Test or NEST.
- For state universities and colleges, apply on the state/university admission portal, often on Class 12 merit.
- Fill course and college preferences on the counselling or admission portal (e.g. DU CSAS).
- Accept the seat, verify documents and pay fees.

Salary
Straight after a 3-year B.Sc, salaries are modest: about ₹2.5–5 LPA (approx.) in lab, QC, teaching or support roles. Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science graduates who move into data and IT often start at ₹4–7 LPA.
Pay rises significantly with an M.Sc, PhD, B.Ed/NET, data skills or a government job. Scientists and analysts with 8–10 years' experience can earn ₹10–25 LPA (approx.). Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's push in semiconductors, space, clean energy, biotech, pharmaceuticals and data science is increasing demand for people with solid science training in 2026. Government research funding through bodies such as ANRF has also opened more project and fellowship positions.
However, the best B.Sc outcomes usually come after further study (M.Sc/PhD) or added skills (programming, data, lab techniques). The degree is also one of the most common backgrounds for civil services and other competitive exams.

B.Sc FAQs
Which B.Sc subject is best?
There is no single best subject. Choose the one you enjoy and score well in: Maths and Statistics lead well into data and finance, Chemistry into pharma and labs, and life sciences into biotech and research. Interest matters more than trends.
What is the difference between B.Sc Honours and B.Sc Programme?
Honours focuses on one main subject in depth, which is better for an M.Sc or research. Programme (General) spreads across two or three subjects and keeps options open, for example for teaching.
Should I take the 3-year or 4-year B.Sc?
Take 4 years if you plan research, a 1-year master's or study abroad, since the 4th year adds a project or dissertation. If you want a job or a 2-year M.Sc soon, the 3-year degree is enough. Most universities let you decide after Year 3.
Is CUET compulsory for B.Sc?
Only for central universities and others that choose to use it. Most state universities and many colleges still admit on Class 12 marks.
Can a PCB student do B.Sc Physics or Maths?
Usually not; these need Mathematics in Class 12. PCB students can choose Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology and similar subjects.
Is B.Sc a good option if I didn't clear NEET or JEE?
Yes. A B.Sc at a good college followed by an M.Sc, data skills or competitive exams can lead to strong careers in research, industry or government.
