What is BA?
BA is an umbrella degree for the humanities and social sciences. You can take a single-subject BA (Hons) such as English, History, Political Science, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Geography or a language, or a multi-subject BA Programme combining two or three of these.
Across subjects you build reading, writing, argument, research and analytical skills. Economics and Psychology include statistics; Geography and Psychology include lab or field work.
3-year or 4-year? Under NEP 2020 and the UGC Four-Year Undergraduate Programme framework, many universities now let you leave with a 3-year degree, stay for a 4th year to earn an Honours degree, or (if you hold a high CGPA, typically 7.5 or more) take Honours with Research, which includes a dissertation. Exit points after Year 1 (certificate) and Year 2 (diploma) also exist. A 4-year degree lets you join a 1-year master's at some universities and can strengthen applications for research or study abroad.
How to choose: pick a subject you would happily read about every day. Economics (often needing Class 12 Maths at top colleges) suits finance, policy and analytics; Political Science and History suit civil services and law; Psychology suits counselling and HR (with a master's); English and Journalism suit media and publishing. BA Programme keeps options open; Honours is better for a master's in that subject.

BA FAQs
Can a Science or Commerce student take BA?
Yes. BA is open to all streams. Science and Commerce students often choose Economics, Psychology or Geography.
Which BA subject is best for UPSC?
There is no compulsory subject, but Political Science, History, Sociology, Geography and Public Administration overlap with the UPSC syllabus. Choose a subject you enjoy and could take as an optional.
Is CUET required for BA?
For Delhi University and other central universities, yes. Most state universities and many private colleges admit on Class 12 marks or their own tests.
What is the difference between BA Honours and BA Programme?
BA (Hons) goes deep into one subject and is better for a master's or research in it. BA Programme combines two or three subjects and is broader.
Is the 4-year BA worth it?
It is useful if you plan research, a 1-year master's, or study abroad, as it adds advanced courses and a dissertation. If you are aiming at jobs or competitive exams, the 3-year degree is usually enough.
Does BA Economics need Maths?
At many top colleges, including DU's BA (Hons) Economics, Class 12 Mathematics is required. Some universities offer Economics without Maths, so check the rules.
