MA

A two-year master's in a chosen arts subject — the route to teaching, research and NET

MA (Master of Arts) is a two-year postgraduate degree in a humanities or social-science subject such as English, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology. Most central universities now admit MA students through CUET-PG, and the degree is the standard entry point to UGC-NET, college teaching and PhD research.

MA (Master of Arts) PG 2 years (4 semesters); 1 year at some universities after a 4-year honours/research UG under NEP 2020

What is MA?

An MA lets you study one arts or social-science subject in depth after graduation. You read advanced theory, learn research methods and usually write a dissertation in the final semester. It turns a general graduate into a subject specialist.

The most popular MA subjects are English (literature, teaching, content and publishing), Economics (policy, finance, research), Political Science / International Relations (civil services, policy, journalism), History (teaching, archives, heritage), Sociology (development, research), Psychology (counselling, HR, clinical training), Hindi and other languages, Geography, Philosophy and Public Administration. Choose the subject you studied in your BA or one closely related, because many universities require it.

Admission to most central universities (Delhi, JNU, BHU, Jamia, Hyderabad and others) is through CUET-PG, conducted by the National Testing Agency, usually in March. You take the subject-specific paper for your chosen MA (for example, the Economics or English paper), and each university prepares its own merit list. An MA differs from an M.Sc mainly by faculty: subjects like Economics, Psychology and Geography exist in both.

Scope & higher studies

Demand for MA graduates in 2026 is strongest where subject knowledge combines with practical skills: economics with data analysis, English with content and communication, political science with policy research, and psychology with counselling. The expansion of universities under NEP 2020 also keeps the need for qualified teachers steady, although teaching jobs remain competitive.

Students who clear UGC-NET/JRF, publish research or build practical skills alongside their MA have the best prospects.

MA FAQs

What is CUET-PG?

CUET-PG is the Common University Entrance Test for postgraduate admissions, conducted by the National Testing Agency. Central universities and many state and private universities use it for MA admissions; you must apply separately to each university after the result.

Can I do an MA in a different subject from my BA?

Sometimes. Many universities allow graduates of any discipline in subjects like English, Political Science or Sociology, but others require the same subject at UG. Check each university's eligibility.

Which MA subject has the best scope?

Economics, Psychology, English and Political Science are popular because they lead to several career paths. The best choice is the subject you enjoy and can excel in.

Is MA required to become a college lecturer?

Yes. You need a master's with at least 55% (relaxation for reserved categories) plus UGC-NET, a state SET or a PhD to become an assistant professor.

Can I become a clinical psychologist after MA Psychology?

Not directly. You also need an RCI-recognised professional clinical psychology course and RCI registration; RCI is moving from the M.Phil to a new master's-level programme, so check rehabcouncil.nic.in.

Is a one-year MA possible?

Under NEP 2020, some universities offer a one-year PG after a four-year honours/research bachelor's degree. Three-year graduates still do the two-year MA.
