What is B.Ed?
B.Ed is the main route into school teaching for graduates. The course is regulated by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), which sets the 2-year structure, the minimum teaching practice and the institute norms. Only an NCTE-recognised B.Ed is valid for government teacher recruitment.
You study how children learn, how schools work and how to teach two school subjects (called pedagogy or method subjects, such as Pedagogy of Mathematics or Pedagogy of English). A large part of the second year is a school internship of around 16–20 weeks, where you plan and teach real classes under supervision.
How it differs from close alternatives: D.El.Ed is a diploma for primary classes (1–5), while B.Ed prepares you for upper primary and secondary classes. The 4-year ITEP combines graduation and B.Ed straight after Class 12. Under NEP 2020, NCTE has proposed bringing back a 1-year B.Ed for students with a 4-year UG degree or a master's; until it is formally in place, the 2-year B.Ed remains the standard route.

Salary
Freshers in private schools usually earn ₹2.5–5 LPA (approx.), with top city and international schools paying more. Government TGT posts (for example in KVS or state services) start around ₹7–9 LPA including allowances (approx.), and PGT posts pay more.
Pay depends on the type of school, city, subject (Maths, Science and English teachers are in higher demand), CTET/TET status and a master's degree for PGT roles. With 8–10 years' experience, heads of department and coordinators can earn ₹8–15 LPA (approx.). Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India runs one of the world's largest school systems, and NEP 2020 is pushing for better-trained teachers, new curricula and smaller teacher shortages in subjects like Science and Mathematics. Central and state governments recruit teachers every year, though the number of posts varies by state and competition is high.
Teacher education itself is changing: the 4-year ITEP is the long-term model and a 1-year B.Ed for 4-year graduates has been proposed. A B.Ed plus CTET/TET remains valuable in 2026, especially when paired with a strong subject degree and good English and digital skills.
After this course
- M.Ed (2 years) for teacher-education and research roles
- M.A. Education
- Master's in the teaching subject for PGT posts
- UGC NET (Education) and PhD for college teaching
- Diploma or PG courses in special education (RCI-recognised)
- Educational leadership / school management programmes
B.Ed FAQs
Is B.Ed one year or two years in 2026?
The regular NCTE B.Ed is two years. NCTE has proposed a one-year B.Ed for students with a four-year UG degree or a master's, but you should check the NCTE website for whether it has been notified and which colleges offer it.
Can I teach without CTET or TET after B.Ed?
Private schools may hire you, but most government and many CBSE schools require a CTET or state TET pass. CTET is run by CBSE and its certificate is now valid for life.
Can a B.Ed graduate teach primary classes?
Following a 2023 Supreme Court judgment, B.Ed holders are generally not eligible for primary (Classes 1–5) teacher posts; D.El.Ed is the qualification for that level. B.Ed is meant for Classes 6 and above.
Can engineering graduates do B.Ed?
Yes. NCTE allows B.E./B.Tech graduates with Science and Mathematics if they have at least 55% marks. They usually choose Mathematics or Physical Science as the pedagogy subject.
Is B.Ed through distance mode valid?
Distance B.Ed from NCTE-recognised providers like IGNOU is valid, but it is usually open only to in-service teachers with prior teaching experience. Always check NCTE recognition before applying.
What is the difference between TGT and PGT?
A TGT teaches Classes 6–10 and needs graduation plus B.Ed. A PGT teaches Classes 11–12 and needs a master's in the subject plus B.Ed.
