What is B.Arch?
B.Arch trains you to plan and design buildings, from a single home to a hospital, campus or neighbourhood. The heart of the course is the design studio, where every semester you design a project of increasing size and present drawings and models to a jury.
Alongside studio you learn building construction and materials, structures, building services (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, fire safety), climate-responsive and sustainable design, history of architecture, and digital tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp and BIM. A semester of practical training in an architect's office is compulsory.
How it differs from close alternatives: civil engineering focuses on the structural and construction side, while architecture focuses on design, space and people. B.Des (Interior or Spatial Design) covers interiors but does not let you register as an architect. B.Planning deals with cities and regions rather than individual buildings.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (10+2) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, IT, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics, Business Studies or a technical vocational subject.
- At least 45% aggregate in Class 12 (CoA Minimum Standards of Architectural Education Regulations, 2020); some states give relaxation to reserved categories.
- Alternatively, a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics and at least 45% aggregate.
- A valid aptitude score: NATA (by CoA) or JEE Main Paper 2A (by NTA). IITs need JEE Advanced plus the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT).
- No upper age limit is set by CoA.
How admission works
- Take NATA and/or JEE Main Paper 2A in Class 12 (both test drawing and aptitude; JEE Paper 2A also tests Maths)
- For IIT Roorkee or IIT Kharagpur: qualify JEE Advanced, then clear the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT)
- Join JoSAA counselling for NITs, SPA Delhi, SPA Bhopal and SPA Vijayawada, or state counselling for state and private colleges
- Lock choices, accept the seat and pay the seat-acceptance fee
- Report to the college with Class 12 marksheet, NATA/JEE scorecard and category certificates
Entrance exams
NATAby the Council of Architecture; accepted by most state and private B.Arch colleges
JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch)by NTA; for NITs, SPAs and CFTIs through JoSAA, and many state colleges
JEE Advanced + AATfor B.Arch at IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur
State counsellinge.g. MHT-CET CAP (Maharashtra), TNEA B.Arch (Tamil Nadu), KCET (Karnataka) using NATA/JEE scores
Planning to study B.Arch? The AISEE merit scholarship can cover up to 100% of tuition fees at participating colleges. One online exam, results by rank.

Salary
Fresh architects in India usually earn ₹3–6 LPA (approx.). Graduates of top institutes joining large firms, developers or BIM-heavy roles can start at ₹6–10 LPA (approx.).
Pay rises with experience, licensed practice and specialisation: senior architects and project heads commonly earn ₹12–30 LPA, and principals of successful practices can earn more. Portfolio quality, software skills, city and client base matter more than marks. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's push on housing, metro and transit projects, smart cities, airports and commercial real estate keeps steady demand for architects in 2026. Green building codes, energy efficiency and climate-resilient design are creating newer roles, and BIM and computational design skills are increasingly expected.
The early years are demanding and pay modestly, but architects who build strong portfolios, specialise or start their own practice have good long-term prospects. Registration with the CoA is legally required to practise as an architect.
