What is M.Des?
M.Des teaches a design process: research users, find the real problem, sketch ideas, build prototypes and test them. You work in studios on real briefs, often with industry partners, and finish with a semester-long degree project.
Depending on the school, tracks include industrial/product design, interaction and UX design, communication and visual design, animation, mobility and vehicle design, and design for services. You learn tools such as Figma, Rhino, SolidWorks, Adobe software and basic coding or electronics for interactive prototypes.
How it differs from close alternatives: B.Des is a four-year undergraduate degree. An MBA focuses on business decisions, while M.Des focuses on what is built and how people use it. M.Arch deals with buildings, and M.Tech with technical engineering depth.

Eligibility & admission
- For CEED: a degree, diploma or postgraduate programme of at least three years after 10+2, or the 5-year GD Arts diploma; final-year students who finish by July can apply.
- CEED has no age limit. Each IIT/IISc sets its own degree requirements (for example, some tracks need an engineering or architecture degree).
- NID M.Des: a bachelor's degree in a relevant field; exact rules depend on the specialisation.
- Most schools shortlist on the exam and then hold a studio test, portfolio review and interview.
How admission works
- Pick your specialisation and check which degrees each institute accepts
- Register for CEED (October; exam in January) and/or NID DAT, NIFT or private school tests
- Prepare a portfolio of sketches, projects and process work
- After results, apply to each IIT/IISc separately with your CEED score
- Attend design tests, portfolio reviews and interviews; accept your offer and pay the fee

Salary
Fresh M.Des graduates from IITs, IISc and NID typically get ₹8–15 LPA (approx.), with UX roles at large tech firms sometimes paying more. Graduates of other schools usually start around ₹5–8 LPA (approx.).
With 5–8 years of experience, senior and lead designers commonly earn ₹20–40 LPA (approx.). Your portfolio, specialisation (UX pays well) and the hiring sector decide pay. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Digital products, electric vehicles, consumer electronics and government digital services all need trained designers, and in 2026 design is seen as a core function in many Indian companies rather than an add-on. UX and interaction design remain the largest hiring areas, while design for AI-based products is a fast-growing niche.
Because hiring depends on portfolios, strong project work during the M.Des matters more than marks. Designers who combine research, prototyping and business sense have the best long-term prospects.
After this course
- PhD in Design at IITs, IISc or NID
- Design programmes abroad (Europe, USA)
- MBA for design leadership roles
- Short courses in UX research or service design
