What is B.Des?
B.Des trains you to solve problems through design. The first year builds basics — sketching, form, colour, materials, design history and visual thinking. Then you specialise in areas such as product design, communication/graphic design, fashion, textiles, interaction/UX or animation.
Learning is project-based: you research users, sketch ideas, build prototypes or mock-ups, test them and present your work. Internships with studios or companies and a final degree project are standard, and a strong portfolio is the main outcome.
B.Des differs from BFA, which is about personal artistic expression, and from B.Arch, which designs buildings under the Council of Architecture. B.Des is about designing for users and industry, and is offered by IITs, NIDs, NIFTs and many private universities.

Scope & higher studies
Design is now a core function in Indian companies: digital products need UX designers, manufacturers need product designers, and the fast-growing D2C fashion and lifestyle market needs fashion, textile and communication designers. The government's focus on Make in India and handloom/craft promotion adds further demand.
In 2026, designers who combine strong visual and research skills with digital tools (Figma, 3D, AI-assisted workflows) are especially sought after. The field is competitive, so a strong portfolio is the key to good jobs.
