What is LLB?
The three-year LLB is the classic route into law for graduates. You study the core of Indian law: the Constitution, contracts, torts, crimes, property, family law, evidence, civil and criminal procedure, and company law, along with compulsory practical papers on drafting, moot courts and professional ethics.
Because students already have a first degree, many bring useful background. An engineer may move into patents, a commerce graduate into tax, and a humanities graduate into litigation or policy. Many colleges also run evening or morning shifts, though BCI requires regular attendance.
How it differs from close alternatives: the five-year BA LLB is taken straight after Class 12 and is offered mainly at NLUs and integrated law schools. The LLB covers the same core law papers in three years without the arts subjects. Both lead to the same right to practise. LLB is different from LLM, which is the master's degree in law.

Salary
Most LLB graduates start at about ₹3–7 LPA (approx.) in firms, companies or bank legal roles. Those who join leading corporate firms or have a strong technical background for IP work can start at ₹8–15 LPA (approx.). Litigation often begins with a small stipend under a senior advocate.
With 8–10 years of experience, corporate and in-house lawyers commonly earn ₹15–40 LPA, and successful litigators can earn much more. Your college, internships, first degree and city all change the numbers. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
In 2026 Indian businesses need more legal help with contracts, insolvency, data protection, GST and regulatory compliance, and courts continue to face large case backlogs. The rollout of the new criminal laws has also created demand for lawyers trained in the updated codes.
Graduates who pair the LLB with a technical or commerce background, or who specialise in IP, tax or technology law, tend to have a clear edge. Litigation rewards patience; corporate and in-house roles reward specialisation and strong drafting skills.
